I wrote her obituary the other day and maybe this will give you a glimpse into the woman, wife, mother, friend and professional my mom was during her life. She, like my dad was such an inspiration, supporter and encourager in my personal and professional life.

I could never sew like she could. She made a new outfit for herself last fall (at age 92) using some of my Yoshiko Jinzenji fabric. I bought her a vintage pattern and of course the instructions were missing so she adapted the pattern and sewed away until she had the pants and vest that she envisioned.

You all surprised me on my last post. I truly didn't think anyone was reading any more. Now that my caretaking responsibilities and daily worries are over, I will have more time to put into this space. I think my mom would like that. She was one of my faithful readers.

Our mom, Esther Denise Sobering, died May 31, 2022, at the Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan. She was born November 24, 1929, in Gretna, Manitoba, Canada, the daughter of Jacob and Anna Siemens.

She attended high school at the Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Gretna and received her RN from St. Boniface School of Nursing in Manitoba. She did post-graduate work at Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Jersey City, New Jersey. She continued her education in North Carolina and revived her career when she moved to Manhattan. She was a pioneer in home health care and hospice and was the director of Riley County Health Homemaker Services from 1981 - 1986. We are proud of her legacy of providing compassionate and quality care through home health services.

Our dad, Fred, was the love of Esther’s life for 65 years. She told her granddaughter Anna that she was very lucky to have chosen Fred even though she was tempted a couple of times to pick someone more flamboyant. She and Fred lived their love story that continued until the day she died. We are happy they are together again.

Esther was proud of her Canadian roots even though she was a naturalized United States citizen. During her lifetime, she lived in over thirty homes following Fred from place to place as he advanced in his career. Esther was comfortable in an apartment in Armenia, on a bus in St. Petersburg Russia, or in her cottage at Meadowlark. She would tell you that the twenty-five retirement years at “White Oaks Farm” near Oskaloosa were the best. Esther maintained a home that was always open to friends and relatives. Neighbors and friends often became part of our extended family. Her Meadowlark friends made her years without Fred and the sudden death of her son, Barry, easier for her. She was strong-willed; tough in adversity, but tender when needed.

Fred, family, faith, and friends were the bedrock of her life. She had a strong and continued faith in Jesus Christ and was active in her local churches. Esther was always busy. She enjoyed crafting and painting especially with her grandchildren and though she never considered herself an artist, we knew she was. She was a prolific painter in the last several years and has passed on a legacy of art to her family. She loved music. She played the piano, sang in choir, and even listened to and pretended to enjoy her grandson Jon’s musical compositions, though they were far from her musical taste. She spent her last days working on a new home design for her daughter, Jacquie. She had her iPad and iPhone by her side until the end. They were her connection to her family and friends. Her son Tim and her grandsons Ian and Jake kept her tech savvy through her later years.

Esther had a gift for connecting with everyone she met, but she had a special connection to animals starting with her beloved Towser, a big black Newfie she had growing up. She loved and treated our dogs like her children, maybe even a bit better.

Her last years were challenging without Fred and with mounting health problems. Living near her son, Tim, gave her independence and yet a sense of security. We are forever grateful for the love, care, and time Tim and Kristine gave Esther in her final years.

She leaves to mourn her passing three of her children: Mike (Cindi) of Dallas, TX; Jacquie (Steve) Gering, Prairie Village, KS; Tim (Kristine) of Manhattan, KS; her daughter-in-law Teeny (Barry) Winter Springs, FL; and her brother Robert (Lynne) Siemens, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada as well as nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband Fred, her parents, her sister Arlene Dick (Siemens), her son Barry and her granddaughter Kendell.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers or cards, donations be made to either Meadowlark Hills or to the Good Shepherd Hospice House. Mom and dad loved their time at Meadowlark. Mom's history with Good Shepherd goes back to 1981 when she was the first Executive Director and they provided excellent care for mom at the end of her life.
https://www.meadowlark.org/giving/current-funds-projects
https://goodshepherdhh.org/make-a-donation/

Thank you for your condolences. font-size: large;">I've been thinking about this event all day and wondering about myself and the power I hold as a woman to affect the lives and careers of other women. I have worked in women-dominated professions my entire life and sometimes I wonder if we, as women, understand the power we wield and the ramifications of supporting and encouraging other women. And on the flip side are we aware of the destructive, soul killing consequences of undermining another woman?

A wickedly smart friend of mine created a little signal that we could give each other when we were subconsciously or even consciously undermining another woman. It was supposed to be a "heads up," think about what you're saying signal. We've all done it. We talk behind someone's back. We make negative assumptions of how and why another woman achieved notoriety or success. We say or do things to bring other women down. Does it arise from jealousy? Are we trying to equalize power with women we are competing with? Read about "Dead Even Power," it's enlightening. Or, even worse, are we wired to be that way?

I write this as a reminder to myself. I try to remember that lifting others, especially other women lifts me. In 2020 I will visualize that symbol before I speak and not after. I can do better.jacquiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07362229673390519468noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8119596690600748752.post-42766162507555383832020-02-13T12:57:00.002-06:002021-01-25T17:17:07.187-06:00WALK 2.0 Preview 2

Even I need a little brush up on skills and techniques every once and awhile and I'm always learning so there are a few new and improved ideas for you in this chapter along with a nice overview of what every walking foot quilter should know. If you are a beginner or haven't quilted for awhile I recommend that you start with the "Walking Foot 101" chapter in the first WALK book.
<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">The "Big Six"

<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">

<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">I've created a set of skills that are the fundamentals for all walking foot quilters. When you master these six you can tackle about any design. The big six walking foot skills in order of difficulty are:

<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">1. Following a marked line
<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">2. Echoing straight and curved lines
<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">3. Echoing with 90-degree and other angled turns without marking
<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">4. Point to point lines with pivoting
<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">5. Quilting in reverse
<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">6. Gentle curves which includes arcs, s-curves and free form curves

<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">In addition to The Big Six which I consider basics, I've added one advanced skill:

<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">1. Turning and quilt manipulation

<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">While these skills aren't everything you need to know as a walking foot quilter, they will give you a firm foundation and the confidence to tackle more challenging designs and larger quilts on your home sewing machine.

<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">

<span face=""helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: large;">The Walking Foot Refresh chapter reviews The Big Six and gives you hints, tips and techniques to master these skills. Chapter 4, which is the Rotational Designs chapter focuses on tackling turning designs and has lots of great information on how to adapt challenging turning designs to make them more continuous and easier to quilt on larger quilts.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The book has a walking foot technique refresh with some new information to support your development as a walking foot quilter, four chapters of walking foot designs, and an extensive chapter called Quilt As Go that explores design principles related to choosing quilting designs as well as a process to help you develop a quilting plan for your quilts, and plenty of examples to inspire you. The quilting design chapters include: sixty-degree designs, sashiko-inspired designs, rotational designs (linear and shape based) and an eclectic set of designs I call variations which are adaptations and extensions of designs found in my first WALK book. There are almost 60 new designs in this book. As always, I'm surprised that lines and gentle curves can come together in so many unique ways.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The 60-degree grid

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When I wrote the first WALK book I shared several variations of grid quilting (crosshatching) which are lovely textural designs for your quilts. But while I was using the 60 degree grid and designs based on this grid in my work, I neglected to include it in the book. I'm so happy to be able to feature it in this book.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This grid gets its versatility from the angles within the diamond, two of which are that magic 60 degree angle and the equal length sides that become the foundation for the designs in the chapter. With one more quilted line a row of diamonds transforms into equilateral triangles whose three equal sides again support the addition of linear and curved elements that develop into stunning designs.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you look carefully you can find the base triangles in this design. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The base grid of equilateral triangles requires marking two lines. The additional point to point work requires marking, but can be accomplished fairly quickly with a homemade marking template. Intricate designs require an investment upfront and in time, but for the right quilt are totally worth it.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This design pushes the limits and will challenge you, but I'm head over heals about it. I love the movement of the curves and the stability provided by the base grid. Can you see the equilateral triangle base in this one? Not all of the designs in the chapter are challenging. There are simple designs too, and I give you ideas for adaptations that will lower the difficulty or support quilters with machines with smaller harp spaces. You never know what you can do until you try.
I'm so proud of that book, but I have to tell you I am thrilled about the follow-up to WALK, WALK 2.0. It takes the basic designs of walk and ramps them up and there are whole new categories of quilting designs in this book. I'm also pretty stoked about the Quilt as Desired chapter that shares my philosophy and process for how to develop a quilting plan for a quilt. We all need a bit of support in that area, right?

Lucky Spool, my awesome publisher decided to put this book out with a BANG! LS is putting out a special, limited edition that will be available for pick up at QuiltCon 2020 in Austin. If you're not going to be there find a friend who is and have them be your designated pick up person! This community is awesome and we can support each other.

This is the slipcase for the book.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I met Shelia when I was teaching in New Zealand and I was so happy for her when she told me she was writing a book. I was excited when her title came across my email from C&T Publishing. I dropped her a quick email to say congrats and she asked me to participate in the blog hop for her book. I had already perused the review copy and was impressed. I always know I'm going to like a book when I find something I can use or things I don't know when I open a book.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I love how this book is organized. It is everything you would ever want to know about using sixty degree shapes in quilts. For each shape Shelia goes into great detail about the shape itself, methods for cutting, sewing, and being creative with that shape. She has these great cutting charts for each shape which I know I will use often. She goes into detail about how to get the most out of your rulers. I love when there is more than one way to do things and she thinks of everything in this book.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Of course there are great quilts in the book. These are two of my favorites, Cosmic Rays made from parallelograms and Pot of Gold is in the sixty-degree strip piecing chapter.

I am thrilled to participate in Sulky's Block Party to
celebrate National Quilting Month. I had
no idea what I was going to make, but when Sulky asked I happened to be
experimenting with lines and trying to stretch how I use one of my favorite
techniques, slice forward, insert backwards.
SF/IB is a slice and insert technique that allows me to create blocks
with precise lines with no matching. Who
doesn't love no matching? I created my
Starline block to test the blocks for a linear star quilt that I want to make
for my family room. I made the test
block 30" x 30" so that it would make a nice class sample and so the
final quilt will finish at 60" x 60".

My Starline block is made up of four identical blocks and
since they are symmetrical they can be rotated around the center to form the
star. The diagram below shows the order for cutting and piecing. I stacked four 15" squares and cut them
all at the same time. I sliced the lines in order from one to seven and then
inserted 1" strips from the last line cut (seven) in order back to
one. I pieced my block using Sulky 50
weight thread, perfect for piecing. This technique require precision and
accuracy in piecing, but I love the challenge!

I
decided to quilt the block since I plan to use a quilt as you go method for the
Starline quilt that will be composed of four Starline blocks. I used a heavyweight thread, a beautiful
Sulky 12 weight with a Sulky 40 weight in the bobbin. With that combination I get great stitch
quality and perfect tension. The heavy
12wt thread gives the quilting stitches loads of presence on the quilt and look
at that gorgeous chartreuse color!

<span style="color: #565656; font-family: "lato" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">Reading a book is fine and an online class can be great, but there is nothing like learning in person!

<span style="color: #565656; font-family: "lato" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">

<span style="color: #565656; font-family: "lato" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">Join me in Kansas City for a weekend of walking foot quilting. You will learn techniques, practice your skills and fill your quilting design toolbox. I'll begin by reviewing the basics and establishing a firm foundation for expanding and growing your skills with the walking foot.

<span style="color: #565656; font-family: "lato" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">

<span style="color: #565656; font-family: "lato" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">You'll have plenty of time to apply that knowledge to learn and practice walking foot-friendly designs from simple to complex. I'll teach strategies for managing large quilts and quilting intricate designs. Together we'll explore how to analyze quilts to create quilting designs that will support and enhance your piecing. You'll leave with a toolbox filled with creative quilting options and the knowledge, skills and confidence to quilt your own quilts.

I loved that place, but there were reasons we had to let it go. It went fast and we were left without a home again. My youngest son was kind enough to let us move in with him and his girlfriend while we found a new home. Cheers to living out of suitcases again. I'm pretty good at it. It's weird how things happen and how this house came to us.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We bought and have now moved into this 1958 Don Drummond built mid-century home. It's only about 15 minutes from our Westside condo, but it feels a world away. It is a Castillian model and was designed by A. Quincy Jones and Frederik E. Emmons. The top photo is our home this spring. Below is a newspaper article from the 50's about the design of our home. I love how it is described as having the "look of tomorrow". It is a timeless, well-functioning design. It's post and beam construction with seven...count'em...seven sliding glass doors. Talk about bringing the outside in!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I love my new home with all its quirks and originality from the 50's. I am learning to understand it by living in it which we haven't done much since move in date since we've both been on the road much of the summer. My sabbatical kicks in in earnest this fall and so I'm looking forward to spending time here and making it our own slowly, but surely.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We've done more than I thought in just over a month, but some things can't wait. We've fixed some plumbing and electrical issues and I've even done a few changes like new wallpaper. I think I'll document those here so I'll share them in detail as we go along.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I want to preserve the historic character of this house. It is a mid century treasure in Kansas City, but I also want to make it Jacquie and Steve's house. It isn't a museum. I can't wait to share more with you. You can see a few more pictures on my Instagram feed, jacquietps, if you're interested, but for now enjoy the exterior!
Life is what we make it and I plan to take more control over mine. In addition to planning events in Kansas City which I hope you will attend sometime, I plan to use the blog to do some teaching as well. It's been too long since I've had time to blog and share what I've been working on.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For now, I am in Spain to help with the Best of QuiltCon traveling exhibit and to teach classes at the Patchwork Festival in Sitges. It is my first time teaching students who don't all speak English which should be an interesting experience. I'll have a translator and I'm sure enthusiastic students. I've already met some wonderful quilters from several countries. With Google translate and my high school Spanish I'm getting by when I'm not with the lovely Amanda, the Member and Sponsor Manager for the MQG who speaks Spanish and has been so helpful and fun to hang out with! Check out our trek through the streets of Sitges with the quilts in tow!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In between setting up the exhibit, womaning the exhibit and prepping for teaching I've had time to explore the city, sample the food and drink and a do a bit of cultural exploration. I never thought that quilting would provide experiences like this.

NOTICE TO ALL:
I am taking a sabbatical in 2019 and 2020. I will not be taking any more teaching engagements until further notice. My family situation has changed significantly and I will no longer be able to be away from home for so many days during the year. I will honor my commitments to those groups in 2018 and 2019 as much as my responsibilities will allow me.

I am working on developing events to be held in the Kansas City area so that if you're interested in learning from me and having an intimate, personal learning experience, be sure to watch the blog for announcements of those events. I would love to share my city and my studio with you.

I have had a blast teaching and visiting shops, guilds, museums and art centers. I appreciate all the hospitality I have been given and how much I have learned from all of you.

I am looking forward to having time to create and to take care of my personal and family responsibilities and find balance in my life.

For those who haven't seen it, this is my latest piece, Veer.

I will continue to share here and for the best updates on my new work follow jacquietps on Instagram.

See you on the flip side. It's been real.
It's time again for the Action Kivu Fundraiser. It's hard to believe that it's been eight years since I've been involved with this project. It's a cause that is close to my heart first because it harnesses the power of sewing to change the lives of women and children and because it is a small organization that does targeted work to make a positive difference in the world.

This year the fundraiser will raise funds to purchase graduation sewing machine kits for 42 women who are victims of the conflict in the Congo. These kits will allow them to use the skills they have acquired through their participation in the program to support themselves and their families.

As part of the sewing community I ask each of you to give what you can to this cause. Dig deep if you can. There are wonderful prizes that have been donated by myself and my colleagues.

I've waited until today to post hoping to see the thermometer rise more during the week. It's not where we need it to be, so let's make this last push to get to the goal and fund this program. The fundraiser ends Sunday so we have two days left to make it happen!

If you want to read more about the organization and its work check out the Action Kivu site.

To give, head here.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and support of these women and their families.
I don't have a blog post in me today, but I want to point you to a great read. Anna Graham wrote this great post. The phrase I took away was "creativity is not a contest." Sometimes I get caught up in all the great work around me and feel like I've got nothing. Thanks Anna.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You know, I've been so bad at blogging this year that I was embarrassed when a couple of friends pointed out that I never blogged about the new book. Yup, I wrote another book, this time about the quilting process. Most of you know I love that walking foot and so I set about putting it through its paces and trying to get the most out of it and the result was WALK: Master Machine Quitling With Your Walking Foot.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The walking foot is awesome for straight lines as we know, and I'll never disparage simple linear quilting, but that's only the start of the creative quilting options that are possible with the walking foot. Just check out the back cover of the book to see what I mean.

I've been studying minimalism in the hope of creating minimalist work that has the simplicity and graphic impact that I crave, but at the same time is interesting and unique. It's been a challenge for me for sure. Simple is hard!

I spent my evenings this week cutting and pasting with my favorite material...craft foam. I think I might have the start of a series I'll be happy with. I love black and white. I want to stay with that for now and add a bit of color when necessary. It might be fun to work in a series too. I think working on these will be a blast. I'd like to control myself and work small, but knowing me that's not going to happen. Stay tuned.
In our community I've experienced and witnessed personal attacks and verbal violence targeted at folks who are different or who have different opinions or positions as well as folks who make accusations with no basis in fact in order to damage another person's reputation. I've watched folks jump to conclusions and attack and ridicule with no thought of asking questions or finding or sharing information to solve problems. I've been demoralized by those who attack without thought and who react without thoughtfulness.

It's time for me, for all of us to speak up. I am starting at the top. I believe that our current president has contributed to the atmosphere of violence and polarization that exists today in our country. This week of twitter tirades is just one example, but it pushed me over the edge. I ask each of you to write your own letter, contact your elected representatives or work in your own way in your own community.

I wrote this letter to the President and I have followed up with a letter to each of my senators and representatives. At least it is a place to start.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">Over the last week I
have been increasingly disappointed in the messages you have sent from your
twitter account. I know after watching
you over the first months of your presidency that you don't seem to desire or react
well to feedback, but I hope you can receive this in the constructive, positive
way in which it is intended. While I
understand that constant criticism must be difficult to receive, it is a part
of the job of the President to listen to all sides whether they support you or
not. It is not the role of the press or
the citizenry not to criticize. In fact, it is their responsibility.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">I have heard all the
criticism of your twitter messages, for example, that they are beneath the
dignity of the office, immature and a distraction from the challenges that the
country is facing, and while I agree, that is not my primary concern. I was especially disappointed to see how you shared the WWF video with the inserted CNN logo and implied that beating up those
with whom you disagree is an effective way to deal with a dissenting opinion.

Morning Joe is fake news. I am a
literate, well-read citizen who can make that determination for myself. What is important to me is the message you
are sending to Americans, both adults and most importantly children: through your tweets you are advocating
violence and name-calling as effective ways to solve problems. I can't find the words to say how much your
example cuts to the core of what I know is wrong. Name calling from the President of the United
States? A video showing the President
pummeling someone with whom he disagrees?
It's both disgusting and dangerous.
Our country as you know is already polarized and violence, both physical and verbal is pervasive
in our daily lives. How can you in good conscience put out these messages to
millions of people who look to you for leadership?

<span style="font-family: "helvetica";">Many Americans jump to
violence as a solution to their problems and now you, the leader of this great
country, are setting that same example and providing justification for those
who choose to do the same. You state
that you want the violence in our cities to cease; yet you show a video showing
the citizens of the United States that you choose to solve your problems with
violence. Is this the America you want
to create? Is this the way you want
Americans to behave? I hear you invoke
God in your speeches. Is this what your
religion teaches you? Were you taught to insult, to strike back, and to use
violence to hurt others? Or, is religion
only a ruse to develop a following? I
see a person's religious beliefs in their actions, not their words. Your actions speak volumes.

argument, spirited debate, artful compromise and respect for those who disagree

Days are running together for me, but here it is anyway.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This weekend's abstraction might be good to keep the chill away if winter ever shows its face in Kansas City. I used the fireplace for the first time the other day to clean it and get it ready for the winter season and as always I was entranced by the flames. They're mesmerizing in a calming, but inspiring way. I watched them intently and noticed the color changes, the shapes, and the movement.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I wanted to translate what I was seeing into a quilt design.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It's odd that I chose lines because they can be very static, but I love a line and so I went for it. It always amazes me how straight lines in the right arrangement can give the impression of curves and movement. It's coming together for me, but I'm not thrilled with it yet. I still need to play and live with it for awhile. I think the colors are pretty good (I think it might glow a bit when it's made out of fabric) and it has a little movement and a nice shape. I love the little flicker at the top.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here it is in its current form. Enjoy!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is the Geared Up quilt, one in a series of quilts that I'm working on to explore the concept of activating space, both positive and negative in my quilts. I love the interplay between the navy and gray spaces in this quilt. The gray dominates as the primary design, but the navy supports in such a great way.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I also love the quilting on this piece. I used one of the geometric quilting designs that will be in my new book, Walk: Mastering Machine Quilting With Your Walking Foot. Jaime, my studio mate pushed me to do this quilting on this piece and it so worked. Sometimes you need a push from a really smart cookie!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I think the quilting design creates beautiful rotational movement for the piecing without overwhelming a simple, graphic design. I'm very pleased with it, I hope you enjoy it too.

I have a whole folder of them. I've made a few of them already and when I have time I'd like to do a whole series, probably in black and white. I have a long hallway on the lower level of the condo that is empty and I'd love to see a set of those fill that space.

I designed this one the other day and I'm loving it. I can't wait to get home to make it.

Here is the block. I focused on the spaces created in the lower right hand corner of the block. It's how those spaces come together with four blocks that creates the shape in the center and makes the design for me. The truncated triangle adds a unique shape that transforms this into something special.

I created another design and buckled down in the studio and almost finished a top. I'm pleased with the colors and the graphic impact of this quilt. I also love the combo of flat solids and shot cottons. A few more seams and it'll be done. I think I'll call it Whirl-a-way!
