I Couldn't Think of A Title

I couldn't think of a catchy title for this post. I simply have a few things I want to share. This is my 'urban garden' quilt.
It started as a personal scrap challenge, a handful each of orange, green and brown scraps and a commitment to make something from them. I started with the idea of fields viewed from a plane and it evolved into more of a community garden, you know those communal gardens where a bunch of folks share a plot of land to plant gardens. There are those well-tended plots and those more hap-hazard ones and plenty of land left to plant. The quilting reminds me of furrowed land. I'm pretty happy with it.
I've also made a few quilting bee blocks..this is underwater sister's portrait gallery for Valerie of the Pieced Together bee.
A close up of the portraits.
A block for Nadia of Common Threads. This is 'the fractured forest' for her brand new baby Gus!
Lastly, this is a picture from the second meeting of the Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild. 69...count 'em...69 folks showed up and we had a ball squishing into the room, enduring the heat and getting to know each other. If you'd like to be a part of the group, head to our ning site, or join or start a group in your neck of the woods.

  1. I'd like to try the wavy quilting. Did you have any trouble avoiding puckers or keeping the lines parallel?

  2. Love your community gardens. The aerial view of farmlands still takes my breath away when I fly. The first time I saw it was in high school after learning about Thomas Jefferson's plan to lay out the land in squares, which was implemented in the Northwest Ordinance. History came alive for me then!

  8. Hmmm, your title could be "A Little of This and A Little of That".

69 people attending your group is exciting! I love how people are getting back to basics and bringing the art of sewing to life once again!

  24. Urban Garden is a delight! I also loved what you did with the mermaid block. It gave me some inspiration as to how to approach a piece of fabric I just received and didn't quite know what to do with. I posted a photo on my blog and would love your input if you get a chance.

  27. I took your previously posted suggestion about exploring the stitches my machine can do and used the wavy one. Same as what you did previously and on this quilt (Urban Garden). I like the waves. I am stitching a baby quilt and used this stitch. It looks nice. I mistakenly thought I should change stitches to a free form concentric circle thing but I don't like it and I think I will do overall waves. You inspire me and have such good ideas. Thank you.

  29. I love your garden quilt. I haven't seen anything like it! It makes me think of an aerial view of gardens in a neighborhood. Very cool. "The Underwater Sisters" block is beautiful, too.

  30. Those pesky scraps, always calling out for attention. Nice finish!

  31. Okay. I can only laugh. I tried to do squiggly lines on my first free motion adventure, just like I saw on your quilt...somehow I just couldn't get them as 'orderly' as yours. Mine look more like waves, and not very consistant waves at that. I supposed I just didn't have an even hand, then I read that you used your machine's special stitch. Doh! :) I seriously laughed outloud at myself. It's ok, though. I'm fine with my waves. It's a boat quilt, anyways.

  32. The urban garden quilt is so beautiful. I love the colors together and it reminds me of fall when the harvest is ready to come in from the fields. Sounds like you had a good time at the guild meeting, too!
