You Are My Sunshine

"When my boys were babies I spent much of my day singing to them. Maybe that's why they are both musicians today.

My favorite song to soothe them to sleep was "You are my Sunshine". You know that song...
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine,
You make me happy, when skies are gray.
You never know dear, how much i love you,
Please don't take my sunshine away."

I digress into happy memories, but the song inspired the quilt. Now that I look at it I'm wondering if those good drugs I got last week are making me nuts.  The quilt is supposed to be for a friend's new baby.
Why did I think that a round quilt would be a good idea?  She's young, hip and fun and I think she'd like something a little different, but really?  This?
I don't know.  It's 40" in diameter, so it's not tiny, but is it practical, usable?  You young moms out there, could you use this?  I guess I could applique it to something, or take it apart and make templates for the corners....ack...I thought a round quilt would be cool, but now it just seems weird.
I'm spending International Quilting Day (today!!) sewing with no distractions.  My hubby is out of town...a quiet house, a humming sewing machine and my dog.   Maybe today I can get something done!
Oh and good news...according to my SPAM, I won the lottery in the UK.  If only.

I have three kids 5 and under, including a 3 month old, so I think I count as a young mom! And I think the circle quilt is AWESOME! really, with all the warnings against using quilts (or any bedding really) in cribs, one of the only thing quilts are practically good for with babies is to put on the floor for them to lay on when they play. (they are of course good for a million non-practical reasons also!)

So a circle quilt would work just great and be so cool and unique! :) (can you tell I'm just a little bit jealous! I love the yellow and gray too!!)

Beautiful quilt!!

I'm old, but I love it! It'll work great as a baby quilt, I think!

We use to sing that song to my grandson who is blind and it was the only song that calmed him down when he was upset.
I love the round quilt wish I had a baby to make it for.

Love the quilt! Also one of my favorite songs to sing when my girls were younger!

Anyone could have a quilt with corners...

Please leave it alone. It will get glowing reviews!

Didn't know it was Quilt Day... but that's what I'm doing too.

I love the design, colors, round shape (a leap from traditional). Like others have said, it'll make a really nice floor quilt. It'll look very graceful hanging from a crib, pretty on a toddler bed, etc. In time it could make it to a tablecloth if desired, could even be a cape folded once on the diameter. But, I can't imagine it would hang well on a wall. Just wondering how to appreciate it after it's practical use. P.S. I'm not a mother or young but do appreciate nice stuff.

Mom of two kids (one still qualifies as young!) checking in. It's great. Tummy time on the floor, laying on the grass for outside time, throwing over a stroller or carseat... it will be loved!

Jaque, it is beautiful. What a wonderful idea. To put a baby on the floor, the awesome yellow. Mind if I copy the circle idea? My youngest daughters best friend is due in June. I just got the fabric to do her quilt. Wow, as always you are a genius.

I'm old too, but know lots of babies ... Round floor quilts are definitely cool! It looks fabulous. Sandra - just make one, and a baby needing it will turn up, or you will find one who needs it! Jill

Round is perfect!!! I am sure that your friend will be thrilled with it. I used to plop a blanket on the floor and lay my now 6 year old on it. Round is hip :)

This is great! I think it would be easier to swaddle/bundle up a baby without the corners, and when the babe is older it will make a great quilt for "tummy time"!

I sing that song to my girls every night. It's a perfect lullaby.
Go for the round! It is different and will make a great play mat.

It's a perfect floor quilt for playtime. I think it would be so pretty as the top layer across a toddler or twin bed or even folded in 1/2 at the bottom of the bed with the round side pointing towards the pillow. Jenna is 6 and we still use a small quilt that size when we are traveling so she can cover up in the car seat when it gets late or have something familiar to take into the hotel to snuggle with. I think you should keep it round. It's so very beautiful!

Sounds like round it is! Certainly won't get mixed up with someone else's quilt. I do love it and am inspired, as always, by your creativity.

I think it's adorable! That's the song my daughter sings to her little one...now I'm just feeling mushy.

I love the round quilt & would use it in baby's bed once he was rolling around for sure. My 19 mo loves arranging his quilts in to a little nest for sleepy time.

Love the round quilt. Super awesome as a play quilt and still awesome as a crib quilt (when they're old enough) and awesome-er as a favorite blanket when the baby gets older.

Please don't change it.

Artfulife said...

I think it's awesome! Could totally see it as a play mat or a snugglie for when the kids are watching cartoons. Perfect! I spent part of the day making the back for an unfinished quilt & then basted it together. Felt good to get it done :)

Love your round quilt!

Love love the quilt; using bias binding should finish it off nicely. I spend a bit of time putting some binding on placemats.

i would love it. i would probably use it in the nursery on the floor like a rug... the blanket my sister made for my son is on the floor in his room and we use it/play on it/change diapers on it multiple times every single day! i say keep it just like it is, it is great! i do and would love it if it were for me.

As a mommy of three boys under 4, I would totally love this. I would probably use it as a tummy time quilt cuase it has bright colors and different shapes. But also a cool race track for matchbox cars. With pit stops in the middle circle.

Seriously, it's cool. Don't take it out.

It's different, but not weird. My sister made a round afghan for her little baby, I think it will be a great gift!

I LOVE that song - brings back fond memories of singing with my hubbie at the top of our lungs while driving all night from South Bend, Indiana to Syracuse NY when our children were infants! If I were the recipient of your quilt, I would be clicking my heels and clapping my hands at the idea that I received something so beautiful AND so unique. Congrats to you!

Perfect for a play quilt for the floor, all the more because babies love strong colour contrast so the yellow and grey/black works great! I love it :-)

Your Sunshine quilt is awesome... Mom and baby will definitely love it.

First, I love your quilt!
Second, I sing that same song to me oldest little girl.
Third, I would love to use that quilt as a baby quilt. If the mom does not want to use it for when the baby sleeps, she could always use it as a most fantastic playmat!

I'm past the young mom age (did that well, yes?) and I think this quilt is perfect! The colors are wonderful as well as the design. The mom you will be giving it to will LOVE it!

I think it is wonderful and I love the colors! I also used to sing that song to my son and used to personalize the lyrics for him, kind of silly but very sweet.

I think a round quilt in any size is awesome! And this one in particular.

I would use it! It'd be perfect for "tummy time" on the floor. :) I'm sure your friend will love it! I'm a little obsessed with circular quilts at the moment... so I may be a bit biased. But I think it's fabulous!

I love it! I think it has great style. And she could use it as a car seat cover, a changing mat, a play mat, 40" is still enough to wrap him up in while cuddling. If you really thing it's not small enough, add a border, but keep it round.

Valerie said...

She'll love it! I'm a young mom...well. A mom to young kids! - and I think that size would make a great playmat. And it's fun! I sing that song to my kids all the time too. When I was living in Guatemala adopting our first son, I even translated it into Spanish-probably not all that accurately- but now my kids know it in both languages :)

i would have been thrilled to receive your quilt. what a lucky person the baby is who gets it.

as always, your quilts are beautiful.

I agree, call it a floor quilt or playmat and you've got a HUGE hit!

I automatically love it, can't get enough grellow! And ditto the floor quilt comment, it looks great for tummy time, all of the contrast is fantastic for baby's developing eyes!

Mego said...

What a great idea! I bet it would fit in the car seats and strollers MUCH better than having to tuck a square quilt in. Especially where the seat belt has to snap. Way to GO!

Looks to me like a round quilt is a grand idea! I bet there will be a bunch of them showing up soon! Very cool!
BTW, I'm not a young mom but I have a bunch of grands and I love this round idea...might even make one for a new baby on the way!

This is beautiful! I love the idea of a round quilt and it will be perfect. I would use it all the time as a play mat and it would be nice in the stroller as well!

I believe round is unanimous! It's fantastic! I've been wanting to make a round quilt to do the playmat turns into a bag to hold toys concept that I saw in a tutorial around Christmas time from Lee of Freshly Pieced. I was trying to add a link, but my phone is being ornery. It's in her tutorial folder. While the grommet concept probably works better, I love your top too much to put holes in it. I think I'd add a Circular sleeve to the back to guide a fabric drawstring through (close to the binding), so that it can lay flat, but then be used to gather everything on it into a bag for on the go fun! So many projects, so little time!

I'm late to the game (young mom, here! Awful about catching up on my blogs because this kid keeps trying to eat my keyboard!), but I love the round blanket. It's nice because it can fit in a smaller space without being all bunched up on the sides, and it would be good for using outside, throwing in the stroller, and perfect for wrapping up little dudes. It's like a ginormous swaddle! Who wouldn't want that?

i'm working on a round quilt also and i've had many second thoughts. mind will be a tablecloth, hopefully. started with a LARGE dresden plate, surrounded by smaller ones. ain't going well. but, i just finished a very scrappy, sew whack sew round quilt to drape over my dogs round bed. they love it!!!
