Solids are a great choice for modern quilts...they help amazing prints shine, and on their own they have that clean, modern look that I love. My quilt, "Think Big" is on the cover. It's a fun, simple, bold quilt.
It's hard for me to choose a favorite Kona color because now there are 243 colors to choose from...28 brand new colors. Mushroom is one of those new colors. This just might be a new basic for me!
It's important to have great basics like ash, snow, charcoal and all the wonderful browns, but there's one color that I haven't found in any other line of solids...it's the perfect pink, light and subtle...wonderful for both a quilt for a baby and for a sophisticated adult. My favorite Kona color is pale flesh!

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 368 of 368I have been trying to incorporate solids in my projects more. I love the clean look they have. I recently paper pieced a semi truck quilt block for my Dad for Father's Day in Kona Marine. It was beautiful!!
I like to use solids when I need a pop of color in the midst of prints. I think this scavenger hunt is a great learning tool, I am just getting my solids collection started. Thanks for the opportunity to win some!

I love solids and I usually use them with contrasting grey linen. Thank you very much for such a chance to win, it's a fantastic giveaway!
I like to use solids in borders and binding which relate to other colors in the quilt. Recently I used a nice Kona blue as a border framing a center medallion. Thanks for the lovely giveaway. My daughter encouraged me to enter. MargaretQuilts mlwright29@hotmail.com
I find I am using solids more and more! Who can resist all those beautiful colours!
I like picking saturated colors for backgrounds and working more solids into the mix.
I like to use a balance of solids to give the eye a rest and add a modern touch to things. Thank you for the giveaway.
I use solids sparingly for quilt fronts, so far just for sashing and borders - I am working on a quilt now that I was trying to use ALL solids for but I'm rebelling against it and have decided to throw in a bunch of prints after throwing up some of it on the design wall :)
A couple of decades ago, I made many quilts with Kona Solids--and I'm not done yet! I love their quality. Although I used to hand quilt them, they're also perfect for machine quilting. I do need to restock some good neutrals--but it will have to be done via internet shopping since I haven't found even basics out here in the desert where I live.
I find using solids complements my print-hoarding personality. ;) There's no fear in running out of a solid, so I use them liberally to complement and stretch prints. All-solid projects are amazingly addictive -- pure color manipulation!
I use solids t contrasts with other fabrics but I`d love to do a quilt only with solids. Thanks for the chance!!
I love all solid quilts but am yet to make one. Solids for me are usually just sashing and borders and binding.
Any which way I can! that's how i use colours.
I'm just starting to add solids to my stash. I'm loving the gray and slate blue shades. Staeting a mystery quilt next month and i've decided to use only solids. Thanks!
Boppiesgirl@gmail.com
Just loving these colors. Mushroom is yummy. Pale Flesh looks like a whisper of pink!
I have to say that solid color quilts are actually my favourite as they naturally have a modern aesthetic. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of this book...your quilt is stunning Jacquie!!! Here's hoping I'm lucky enough to win:)

The beauty of using solids is the focus becomes the design rather than patterns in the fabric. The Amish are the stars of this. atlosordo@netscape.net
I like to use a solid or 2 in my quilts to add a calm space. I love using the bright solids.
so lovely! i've yet to make a all-solids quilt..perhaps its in my future? :)
I haven't tried too many solids yet. I just bought your book, quilting modern, and hope to try the shattered glass pattern with solids. You are a great inspiration. Thank you for sharing with the world.
Solids give my quilts time to dance with the prints. I also use them to emphasize an especially important color, tone, or value.
Jane
Congratulations on your Think Big quilt making the cover of this beautiful book! I just finished an "ice cream quilt" for my daughter with all sorts of summery Kona solids.
I can't believe when I started quilting years ago that the instructor said that using solids was boring...unless it was black. I have done traditional quilting and recently found myself wanting to stray from my "norm" and thinking about solids. Was thrilled when I went to the CQA show in Halifax and saw all the vibrant solids and modern quilts. I'm inspired and ready to pick up my needle again. It's like a giant crayon box =D
I like solid color quilts, but also like prints and solid sashing
Oh I would just die for this bundle and book!! I LOVE the new colors. It makes me want them all!
Solids? I used to use them just as background or in Amish inspired quilts, but I have been influenced/corrupted by all these gretat quilters online, and I am adding solids to other things as well.
I like to add solids to rest the eyes!
knspears (at) gmail (dot) com
I use solids a lot for sashing and to frame prints! Love love love em!
It's always been difficult for me to stick to all solids -- would love a chance to try some of the ideas in this book, though!
Only solids can emphasis a great print....like the Batman fabric I'm using to make quilts for my 2 grandsons! Some of those new Kona colors would be perfect, I'm just sayin'!
I love the idea of working with solids, and the statement that they make. Thanks for all your hard work.
I used solids on a quilt that I call my Amish style quilt due to the bright solids and the black background. You can view it on this page if you are interested. It was fun to make! http://ilovescruffydog.blogspot.com/p/page-2.html
Thanks!
I am intrigued by the idea of an all solids quilt. I use solids for backgrounds, of course, but also when the prints are very busy to help ground the design. When I learn to do quilting designs on my own - especially by hand - I think I would like to use lots of solids with that.
Thank you for the giveaway!
I am accustomed to using prints with solids as frames and accents. This book is inspiring me to try a quilt of all Kona - the hardest part will be choosing which ones!
I like to add solids to things with busy fabrics - just to even it out a bit.
I've never used solids too much but I'd love to make a traditional Amish style quilt with solids :)
I use solids to highlight a gorgeous print or feature fabric, but am longing to make a solids-only quilt or five!
I usually use solids for backgrounds or borders. I have made a couple Amish sampler quilts with solids.
I have really grown to challenge myself with solids use...they can be so dynamic when using various quilting patterns and techniques. Really showcase the stitching. Have gained a new appreciation for them!
I love solids paired with prints.
i like to mix solids with prints. and i can't wait to see all those new neutral solids in person!
I love using solids and they are great for making quilts for guys! Love the new Kona colours.
I've fallen so hard for solids this year that now I'm finding it hard to use prints... Would LOVE to check out that book. And of course those fabrics too!
Just now I am working on a color challenge quilt and I'm using a solid light cheddar (I call it Velveeta) as the background. I got a lot of "um" type comments at first and now more commenters are saying "that looks great". Also I am using solids as setting triangles on a scrappy strip quilt with blocks set on point in the alternate rows. I love working with solids.
I love using solids as backgrounds, but also as quilting 'basics'. A solid jewel tone can really punch up a quilt full of prints. I just finished making a wee snap frame pouch using all of the new Kona colours - they're all so vibrant and fresh. Thanks for the giveaway. I love all of the quilts in this book!
I love Kona cotton and have used them in my quilts for years. There is nothing like a good solid to bring out a design. And so needed in some quilts as a place for the eyes to rest.
I love solids! And use them in almost every quilt I make. I am about 1/2 way done quilting my solid love quilt, and I can't wait to finish it and snuggle under it. I am sure I will find a lot of great uses out of these! Thanks for the chance to win!
I use solids to give a rest for a pop of bold prints...haven't done any purely-solids designs yet, I like the modern prints too much. Colour is everything!
I've used solids to highlight prints, for backing, and for binding, but also for either lining or outside fabric in bags. I've played with the idea of an all solids projects for a while. Would love to win.
I like using solids with my prints to help my prints stand out or highlight a point or shape in the block. They work great to make a quilt "pop". Thanks for the chance to win :)
In the few quilts I've made, the solids are to accent the prints. My next will be a red and white double nine patch on point. I would love to win these solids in beautiful quality fabric to make a fresh modern quilt. Thanks for the opportunity.
So far I've only been using solids as a contrast to prints, but this book is inspiring me to do my very own solids quilt!! dee at poshyarn.co.uk
I love solids as a contrast to my prints, especially when you don't want something to be too busy.
ks(dot)eyles(at)yahoo(dot)co(dot)uk
Both the book and the bundle of fabrics are wonderful. It would be great to win and to make a quilt from my favourite. I like to use solids in a Twisted Log Cabin, a Ladder Quilt or a quilt in the style of Denise Schmidt.
klarydevries@hotmail.com
I love solids in my quilts and quilts made exclusively from solids too!
I use solids to make quilts for my 3 sons who don't like all the "girly" printed fabric. :-)
I love adding an unexpected splash of a solid color to many of my projects. Solids help my quilts and other projects less 'crazy'.
Solids are a great foil for prints, to tie things together or for a statement on their own
I have been a print girl for years - except this year, I am loving the solids - I think because they can help ME make a bold statement in my creative process - rather than my print fabric. Solids have induced me out of my box.
LOVE LOVE LOVE your blog!
I usually use solids in combination with patterned fabric, but I'm eager to try to make an all solid quilt. They look so stunning. Thanks for the chance.
I tend to use solids as a compliment to prints, but really re-thinking it after seeing some of the quilts from my guild (PMQG)and in some of the blogs I read. Solids are really stunning used without prints.
I use solids mostly for sashing, borders and applique. But... I bought a wonderful new quilt pattern that highlights solids in bright colors and can't wait to make it! Thanks for the chance and for a great blog!!
I started using solids in a few quilts and now that the color selection is so great I just want to use them all the time.

These are just down right yummy! I love solids! I use them in quilts for a bit of a more modern look because I don't like a lot of busyness. I have about a zillion quilt projects waiting to be started that these would be perfect for!
I have always loved solids and years ago the only ones that I could find were poly/cottons. I'm so glad that there are so many wonderful colours to choose from in high quality cottons.
Thank you for the chance to win.
It all depends on my mood! I like solids as backgrounds, but I also like them as the starring attraction in a quilt. For instance, I love the vibrancy of Amish quilts, and would love to make a quilt similar in style for myself.
I love using solids to accent a bold or colorful print. Would love to win the bundle, How fun!!!!
Thanks
M
I love to use solids for quilt backs. It's so much fun to pull out my color card swatches and pick just the right color.
I do love projects made entirely with solids, but I genereally use them along with prints to keep a project from becoming too busy and muddled. Eyes need a place to rest!
I love solids for the drama and contrast that makes great designs and piecing shine. I would love a copy of the book. Btw, I LOVE you and Katie's book
I would love to win these solids. I have just 'discovered' modern quilting and would like to begin using more solids, exploring their use as negative space to enhance the beauty of a design/pattern.
Thank you for this opportunity.
michelle
piecing, framing, backing, binding...love solids all the time.
WOW...those colours are gorgeous!! Need to improve my solid stash and the book looks very inspirational!
Pick me, pick me...hands waving in the air...jumping up and down!
I use solids mostly as a background. However, I'd like to expand my thinking and create a solids-only quilt. We Love Color would certainly help with that!
i love solids but so far have only used them to offset print fabrics or to bind my quilts. my next project is all-solids though so this is perfect timing - picking the colors is the hardest part!
25th is my birthday so that would be a great present. I am going a round robin bee so having a stash of solids helps me work with the colors that are in the quilt in progress I get each month.
I only use solid colors, because they let me show the design of the quilt without the distractions of prints.
I'll mail you some pics.
Me gusta usar colores lisos porque me dejan mostrar la intención en el diseño sin la distracción de los estampados.
I love to use solids as a compliment to colors. I have yet to use only solids in a quilt, I recently used only solids in a quilt and I plan on using the quilting to enhance the look.
My favorite use must be carefully picking a solid to tweak how other colors appear in a quilt. I'm just coming to appreciate the extent to which the colors near a fabric influence how it looks. A recent project had a chartreuse-y element I wasn't loving, and I was surprised to see how golden it looked when paired with a golden yellow solid. Bingo!
I like the way solids lend a graphic appeal to a quilt. (And I love Kona's "Pale flesh" color!)
I use solids as backgrounds mostly, but have started to think of them more like a paintbrush. Your designs are definitely an inspiration.
I'm new to using solids, but I love to use them with some pretty bold prints...and I've planned a monochromatic quilt - with big splashes of color, of course
I haven't really tried using solids, but they are so pretty. I'll have to go blog stalking to find some great uses for solids. Thanks! alonzoteressa(at)hotmail(dot)com.
I use solids as my base. It achors a pattern and helps to showcase the reason I bought the patterned fabric in the first place - because I liked the pattern!
there is so much potential for using Kona solids. I've just started using ash as background for a wedding quilt for my nephew.
Such a generous giveaway- so many lucky people, and fun to be introduced to so many more blogs.
If I'm playing with bold prints I like to use solids for calm places in the quilt. I have yet to make an all solids quilt, but I've always been drawn to Amish quilts, so I'm looking forward to making a contemporary solids quilt of my own.
I love bold, bright fabrics so I use solids to calm them down enabling them to meet and be happy
You guys are making this scavenger hunt, hard with all these different colors in the post haha tricky tricky. Im keeping track though!
So here is my most recent Kona Creation http://www.flickr.com/photos/pileofabric/7321177374/in/photostream
I would definitely put that bundle to use right away on another quilt. I would like to make one of my own designs.
I love solids! I use them to help frame my favorite prints and to give the eye a place to rest in what could be a busy quilt. Gotta love Kona Cotton!
I use solids anytime, anywhere and Kona solids are my favorite!
I use solids for everything! Borders and sashing, blocks and binding and quilt backs. I love them all and am slowly building a nice little stash of them.
My first quilt was made from all solids. One can never have enough solids.
I like solids because it lets my eye take in design. Prints are like loud children..they like to get the attention. I am really liking eggplant right now.
I love using the solids to make quilts and smaller quilting projects look modern. :-)
I like bright, bold solids used together. Prints can become a little busy and 'too much' for me in the bright colors I love. Solids let me play with the colors I love and still have a fresh, clean look.
Baby quilts
I like to use solids with prints as either a splash of bold color or a softer place to rest your eyes. Thanks for the chance to win.
I like to use solids in a quilt to break up the patterns and give the eye a place to rest. The new colours look really nice.
I started a solid project about a year and ahalf ago, I think it is time to get it out and see how it has aged? If I remember it is a rainbow of emotion. I know there is a couple of grey but that mushroom looks wonderful.
I am using solids in a more bold way--dark charcoal grays juxtaposed with rainbow solids, for example. It is exhilarating!
wordygirl at earthlink dot net
I almost always use solids to complement other fabrics but really want to do my first all- solids quilt!
Oh I love these new solid colours. Please pick me randomly
I love to use the white solids in my quilts. Lately I have been most inspired by white backgrounds and a lot of negative space.
rhtfld@gmail.com
I'm starting to come back to solids after many years of not using them. The new colors are just so great! I mainly use them as backgrounds to set off my scrappy prints. I'm still trying to get over my fear of solids, mostly because my quilting is not so good. I like the modern, clean look that the right solid can give a quilt.
OOOH Pale flesh, YUMMY,, have to agree on that delicious color being my favorite as well. Regards and scrubbles to Bruno

I am in love with the indigo. Such a beautiful deep dark blue!
i love using solids in quilts. most of the time i use coordinating colors to pair with prints.
I have just recently discovered that my stash has WAY too many prints! I have started collecting solids and this book sounds like it fits the bill in terms of learning how to use my solids. I didn't realize there are so many choices! I'm so happy quilt shops are starting to carry some really amazing colors. Thanks! Connie in California
This is not a suck up comment but...I've been using solids in my quilts since I discovered your blog quite a while ago. Interestingly, the first few quilts I made almost thirty years ago, were all solids. Then I "learned" that one should use prints so I headed that way until your gorgeous quilts reminded me about how solids can really show off the graphic nature of the pieced blocks.
I like using high contrast solids, a bright lime green is a favorite. Love the pink you used in your quilt, I need some of that!
I use solids along with prints, and sometimes if I'm feeling stressed, I'll take out all my smaller pieces of solids and arrange them in various color orders. Please tell me I'm not the only one!
Have to confess...I don't use so much solids....but I'd love to...the Kona solids ain't available at my quilt store in Sweden...and that's a pity...am drawn to these new and modern quilts with just solids and it would be do much fun to work with them.... Someday ...:0))))))
I found you via Angela Walter's forum and am I glad I did! Thank you for the chance to win!!
Solids are perfect for highlighting the quilting. I'm starting to use more solids lately for exactly that reason...I love the quilting designs.
I use solids to accent the prints I'm using. I love the new colors of Kona and there are just so many to choose from...yummy!! Cristina
I love solids -- my first quilt was made completely with solids. Looks so fresh and modern.
:)
Im just starting to use neutrals and solids and found out... .. that I'm loving it. Now its time to stock up my shelfs with colorful kona, so thanks for the chance
I can't imagine making a quilt without solids. I've tried, but in the end, they always seem to creep in. I think they give a quilt breathing room and calm things down, but on the other hand, an all solids quilt is just full of energy. And, I agree about the new pink. Perfect!
I will definately be checking out this idea. New to quilting and love the clean look of solids but I am kind of scared of quilting them. Maybe winning this would give me the chutzpah to just DO IT !!!
I love two color quilts, whatever
those two colors are. Now we have more choices,. fun fun
I have been in a workshop for the past three days. Finally I am able to be back at the computer.
At the first quilt class I took, my instructor helped me place fabric on the design wall. I had several solids to pace in the quilt. She was not, at that time, a fan of solids and helped me weed them out. I was not sold and put them back in. Best choice ever.
I use solids all the time, especially for sashing and borders on quilts.
I am planning my very first quilt using only solids right now. There are so many color choices, but I have chosen greays, purples, orange, blue and a hit of red. May sounds scary but I think it is going to be awesome! Thanks for the great giveaway.
I like to use solids to highlight the colors of my quilt and to frame my work.
I love solid colors in combination with patterns.
I have to admit I do not use a lot of solids so this would be a great start for me!
I just made a quilted sewing machine cover and used a solid background to set off the batik patchwork applique applied to it.
I LOVE these new colors!
I use solids in EVERYTHING! A great way to accent a beautiful print.
I love the solid colors - no prints! thanks!
Kona solids as background fabric and using solids enhance busy fabrics. I used to use solids and then worked my way away from them and now I'm back with solids. YES!!
So far I'm just inspired by solids, but I'd love to make a big, bold, no-prints quilt. With lots of beautiful greens.
Debbie R.
I use solid fabrics to ground my work!
I've been envisioning a large NY Beauty block out of solids against a pattern print, I think the Rooftops in Silver from Jessica Hogarth's (sp?) VeloCity line. Maybe as a big pillow?
I've always been a fan of solids, but there's never been a huge variety until the past few years. Prints seemed to reign supreme. I'd love to do some color block quilts and pillow covers.
P.S. If I win, I'd have it shipped to my daughter in Indiana. Learned the hard way to NEVER have anyone send packages through the mail here :/ We have enough friends coming down to visit that could bring it. Fingers crossed!
When I started quilting the only place solids were used was in the background. I am lovin' solid color quilts now. Love your quilt on the cover.
I use solids to enhance great prints. I am still not very confident mixing a lot of prints so solids are the way to go for me. Plus its amazing how different a print can look depending on which colors you pair with it.
I haven't used a lot of solids but I have seen some fantastic solids swaps on flickr that I would love to try. thanks for the give away.
I love color, too! Wow, what a fantastic book - love all the sneak peeks. Thanks for a chance!
I am currently using solid orange, herb, and red to offset a simple quilt using really busy vintage print mushroom fabric.
I like to use solids as a contrast or to highlight a pattern.
I have ordered a few solids, but I haven't actually used them yet. I didn't really think all that highly of solids until recently. I guess I'm learning!
oh, my, i use kona solids for sashing, borders, blox, flanges, piping and applique. i piece my fav light, light solids for background, too, for some of my applique. i love your cover quilt on this marvelous book and would like to win the copy for it. thanx for the opportunit to do so.
Quilting, of course!! i really love all solid quilts and have made several. they are my favorite quilts.
I have just realized the amazing potential for the right solids to make a quilt pop!
Thanks for the opportunity to win!
Jonoand fiona@yahoo.com
I like to use solids in binding, sashing and sometime the whole quilt. They make such a bold statement and sometimes bold is what is called for.
I use more solids than prints in my quilts as I like the unusual contrast it gives. I would love to win this!
Sometimes a quilt needs a solid color. Nothing else will do. Would love to make a quilt with only solid colors. This seems a wonderful place to start. I also use solids in doll making. It is difficult to find the perfect shade. Kona has such a wonderful selection. Thanks for a chance to win book and bundle.
Congratulations Cover Girl!!! : ) I love solids and use them for everything. Solids to compliment prints, solids on their own, sashing, backing, binding. I love it all.
I'm only now getting interested and seeing the beauty in solids. I used to think they were just so plain, but now I'm really liking what they can add to a quilt.
I don't use solids often, but they are great for toning down wild prints.
Would love to work with these bright solids!! Congratulations on the cover!!!!! sjtoby (at) yahoo (dot) com
I have just starting using a lot more solids in my projects. The possibilities are endless.....
Fiona
Jonoandfiona@yahoo.com
I'm a beginner so this would be awesome for me!!
I love solids. I think they really bring in the other colors of the quilt. I use them often also in the backing of quilts with a smaller amount of the prints so you can see my favorite colors in the prints.
I would love the chance to work with solids. I'm fairly new to quilting and haven't worked much with solids. Thanks for the chance
I love the solids. The possibilities are limitless!!
Working hard to make solids my friends! Love the clean look they add and the opportunity for awesome quilting.
Forgive me... I am just Begining... I now use solids in borders and backings; but would like to start using them to accent my print fabrics.
I use solids to accent patterned fabrics
I had not noticed mushroom until ou highlighted it. Lov this color.
I love using solids to give the eyes a "resting" place, especially since I've been known to use many, many (many, MANY) prints in my quilts. My favorites to stick in are black and (thank you, Gerald Roy) orange (to the red-side).
I use solids on thier own or to complement prints. I love them with everything and would so love to win this!!
Well, so far have been only using them as backgrounds, but when I see all the gorgeous quilts and blocks made just using solids I am really tempted to stretch my boundaries :)
I've just started working on my first "all solids" quilt. The design is pretty basic since I wanted to start simple but I'm really enjoying the vibrancy of a "pure color" scheme so I'm sure I'll be doing more of these. I look forward to getting some new inspiration from this book...thanks for the chance to win a copy.
Oh man, I really need some solids help. I use Kona Ash and Charcoal so much that I'm gray-ed out. I need some new ideas!
I love the use of solid colors in this book. I would love to win the book but also the fabric. I have limited access to solid colours so this would be like a big box of chocolates!
Barb@Witsend
So many colors to work with! I usually work with prints and use solids for accents, but lately I have enjoyed looking at the newer modern quilts using solids.
