A Good Screw Up Keeps You Humble

Sometimes you have to laugh, call yourself an idiot and then put on your big girl panties and fix your mistake. This is my peace sign quilt...well, almost. Notice something missing...we'll I didn't and neither did all the people who read this pattern for me. Nice to know at least I wasn't alone. Too bad the commenter who pointed out my mistake was anonymous. I'd like to thank her. She's got a great eye for seeing what's really there, or not there in this case! Yup, the bottom bar of the peace sign is missing. Yeah, I have to redo the pattern. Shouldn't be hard, just embarrassing.

Good thing is I still love the quilt and it'll make me smile every time I use it.
So off to eat my crow and fix my mistake. What colors should I use for the next one?
Too bad it's not April 1....I missed being an April Fool by only one day. I guess I only get to be a regular everyday fool.

  1. You could call it your Mercedes Benz quilt, HA! I love the quilting.

  2. Ok, I really was thinking that it was your interpreted design of a peace sign. Who am I to say your design is a mistake? No mistakes in design...it makes that quilt really special!!!!

  3. DOH! Gorgeous quilt, regardless!

  4. Just think of it as an Amish style Peace sign. The Amish purposely put an error in their quilts, as only the Lord can create perfection!

  5. I think I like it better this way. I had to google peace signs to even figure out what you were talking about was missing. I think I would keep it. Adding that bottom bar might make it too busy and besides it's really about your own interpretation anyway, right? I love it the way it is!

  6. Wow, I would stash that puppy out of my sight along with my big girl drawers rather than undo ALL of that hard work! I would moan for a while, too!

All the more reason for me to invest in a good, ergonomic seamripper! Hang in there!

  7. I am not sure what you are talking about, I would just leave it alone, especially if no one else noticed but one person.

  8. I notice it...but assumed I had always drawn peace signs wrong and you finally showed me how it was supposed to be! Oh well. Cute quilt!

  9. hahaha-
i first saw your post on my google reader this morning and i kept looking at it thinking "isn't there a third bar?" i looked it up on google images because i thought i was going crazy.

but you know what? i love that you shared it with us even though it wasn't what you initially set out to do! and it's a gorgeous quilt no matter what.

  10. Don't worry about the mistake because nobody is perfect. I don't think I have ever done a project perfectly anyway. It is beautiful and I am sure you will love it with all its imperfections.

  11. I too was thinking well, it's a Mercedes quilt... You know I'm a fan of the Mercedes!! ha. The quilting is so great! Hope those allergies get better soon!!

  12. As a math teacher, I think it would be a great math problem for students: how many squares have to shift to include the middle leg of the peace sign? How can you keep the proportions the same but scale it larger?

See, you are just helping curriculum.

  13. But Jacquie, the bottom bar is there only you coloured it the same as the background! It's a great quilt - just rename it if you feel awkward about the 'missing' piece, lol.

  14. Seems like mistakes are in the air sorry about that deleted comment!
I was going to say I need to make one of these quilts for my boy he loves Mercedes so this would be perfect for him :-)

  15. You could just rename it (much easier)"Ode to Mercedes". :)

  16. Turn it upside down - and it looks like a Y inside of an O. You could name it "OY!". :)

  17. You've got a great sense of humour, Jacquie. Sorry about the missed missing bit. I'd love to see it done in orange/yellow/grey if you're going to take a second crack at it!

  18. he he! we all do dumb things sometimes. I thought there was something off in your earlier post but I didn't notice it :)

  19. A bit of peace is better than none at all and the quilt is just fine the way it is!

  20. It took me FOREVER to figure out what "bar" you were talking about. I NEVER put that bar in a hand drawn peace sign. To me it's PERFECT! I say leave the pattern as is!

  21. Your quilt still looks good. I really like your quilting. I love the look of your blog now.

  22. Heavens, don't be embarrassed. Only people who refuse to admit imperfections should be embarrassed! I like you better for being real!

    Blessings!

  23. just call it your Mercedes-Benz quilt
    LOL!

  24. I just love the quilting! Never mind the 'mistake' which I never would have noticed!

  25. It's your Mercedes quilt!

My mom made me some Mercedes socks accidentally at a girl scout event, but luckily it was just puffy paint.

  26. It's a great quilt. If it were my quilt (and I wish it were), I would consider changing the quilting by making it straight line quilting where the bar should be and say "I meant to do that!" Quilting is so forgiving : )

  27. I love the quilt, J. And you are not a fool!

  28. I love it...in all it's flawed glory. if it was my quilt and my mistake, I would name it Humble and cherish it as a reminder of me....flawed in all my glory!! Besides it's about time the peace symbol gets a remodel, lol.

  29. I love your peace sign quilt!!! I thought you left that bottom part out on purpose. I made a peace sign quilt last year for a school auction and I deliberated for a while on whether to include the bottom bar or not and drew it out both ways before deciding. I have seen peace signs with and without so if I were you I would keep it as is. I love the quilting lines on this quilt. It must have taken you forever...well, it would have taken me forever :-)

  30. Hey, our family loves German cars! The Mercedes symbol is great, BUT, VW would be even better!

  31. The quilt is great Jacquie! I think it happens quite a bit, actually....a few years ago some students at Shawnee Mission East HS printed off what they thought were peace symbols onto tee shirts....turns out the symbols looked just like yours! The press loved it!

  32. To me it looks like the Eiffel Tower! It could be your Tres Chic Quilt!!

  33. I just didn't see what was missing. I finally had to Google "Peace Sign" to figure it out. Now, I get it!

  34. I'm guessing most of us were drooling over the grid quilting and never even noticed...fabulous job!

  35. I agree -- give it to someone who drives a Mercedes! Or send it to Mercedes themselves. Maybe they'll send you a car as a thank you!

  36. I love your mess-up. Personally, I've been screwing stuff up for over 40 years and trying to fix my mistakes, or at least learning from them. My sister and I once made blouses out of some really mod fabric with cool circles and dots. Guess where the circles ended up? Unwearable.

  37. The y Chromosome quilt was my first thought. Flip it!

  38. I also had to google peace signs to find out what you meant by a missing bar. :)

  39. Have to say I noticed it but I am a 60's girl! :)
Love that you took it in stride though.

  40. Too funny. I'm a teacher and there was a peace sign that one class of kids had made in our front hallway at school. Every time I'd pass it, I'd think something was not quite right ~ but I couldn't figure it out. Then one day a music teacher from another school visited and said, "You guys forgot something in that peace sign!" Same thing! And I lived through the peace movement. So don't feel badly!!!!!

  41. Snickered a bit. Makes a noobie like me feel better about attaching my binder from the back to the front instead of the other way around :) But if we were perfect quilts, we'd have nothing to learn :)
