Prickly Pincushion

Ok, I know a pincushion is not that hard to make, but I am struggling with this one. It's a free Heather Bailey pattern that is available on the Better Homes and Gardens website. Beautiful when Heather makes it. I was so pleased with the shape. It's a rectangular prism (how's that for some math knowledge.) I've never sewn a box before and it turned out so nicely. Then I tried to put in the decorative ribbon. This is what happened with my attempt. Can you see the big hole in the middle? I tried to put this grosgrain ribbon through the center and then you wrap in half way and back down the center, up again, wrap around...I had a big needle with a big eye. I had to use a PLIERS and every ounce of strength I had to pull that needle through. It ended up ripping this hole and I just pulled it all out in disgust. What am I doing wrong? The ribbon is the same size as the one in the pattern. Any ideas would be so much appreciated. I wanted to give this as a gift to a friend on Sunday. Help!
On a happier note I've had many more visitors than usual to my blog since my wonky log cabin block tutorial appeared on Sew Mama Sew. Welcome everyone! Thanks for stopping by and for your kind comments. I have tried to respond to each of you and visit your blogs if I can locate you. Many of you have that no reply email...so to you...it's great that you came by! If you make something from the tutorial I would love to see your work. Have a great weekend!

Sheeesh, what a hassle! Maybe your fabric was a tighter weave than the one in the example? Cute pattern, though. Are you going to try it again?

could you just use embroidery floss instead, since the ribbon doesn't work and add a large cute button over the top of the hole?

congrats on your featured tutorial on sew mama sew!

The pattern says "doll makers needle".....and that is way longer than just a needle with a large eye. You would be able to pull it thru much easier.

Sorry about the ribbon. And sorry I have no help to offer. But the fabric is really lovely :)

Congrats on the Sew Mama Sew!

Maybe you could salvage what you've done by fusing an applique over the top and make something a bit different to Heather's.
When I made mine, I used a very long needle and embroidery thread, stitched through the middle, then added the ribbon after, with a flat bow on top, and stitched through the bow.

Hi Jacquie I too use a doll's needle and add the ribbon afterwards. Learned the hard way tying upholstery quilts...like you I had to get the pliers out and my index fingers were sore for days!!Good luck!

Congratulations on your featured tutorial over at sewmamasew!
I can’t imagine any ribbon going through fabric without making a hole. Maybe the ribbon yu used of to stiff.
Maybe you can cut to pieces of ribbon, sew the ends together, push them over the pin-cushion, one horizontal and one vertical and put a button on top of the seams by using a doll needle?

I made the same pincushion and did exactly what you did. I used all the right tools and had a horrible time getting the ribbon through! I was very frustrated!! So I made a second one and just sewed buttons on either side.

Oh yes I have seen that pincushion before it looks like a really lovely one. Pulling grosgrain ribbon through the center sounds really rough though. Congrats on the Sew mama mention
