Music is Life

I received this picture on my phone last Thursday with the message "Headlining!" My son's band, The Letter Division, played their first headline gig at a club in Lawrence last week. My son was thrilled and we were tickled pink for him! So proud to have a rock star in the family!

A while ago I stumbled onto this retro radio fabric in the bargain bin and played with it one night and came up with the idea for a series of "Music is Life" mini quilts. And thanks to Peg's Challenge they are finally a finished set. These are going to hang on the wall by the door in my studio. They remind me of my boys and how much music is a part of our lives. I love the quilting on these and it wasn't too hard to do either. That's a good thing!

Yesterday I had a cutting marathon. This is not my usual mode of working. I like to cut a bit, sew a bit, cut a bit etc. I hardly ever cut all the fabric for a quilt before I start. Mostly that's because I'm usually designing as I go. I cut most of the rest of the triangles that I'll need for the hour glass quilt and I cut a bunch of 4" squares of Katie Jump Rope fabric (I don't have a clue what these are for...well maybe a clue, but not a concrete idea.) I thought since I was in cutting mode, why not? Goals for today: catch up with the quilt-a-long (2 blocks to do) and baste my Little Blue quilt. Maybe get started quilting on that one. Pretty ambitious goals for a busy day! It's good to have a goal!

they are so cool. I love how you describe yourself in your profile as a novice quilter. Your work amazes me, your points are so perfect, your fabric choices are fantastic. I wish I was as novice as you ;)

oh, and congratulations on your son's headline gig!!!

Your 'music' blocks are so, so, gReAt!!! How funky & fun--I love them. Your son headlines in music and you headline in quilting ideas & picture taking!

The KatieJumpRope fabrics looks so yummi!!! I love them, and I am very excited to see what you'll do with them :-)

Cutting is not the best part of quilting for me either....LOL.

Congrats to your son! That is so cool. Love those little radio blocks. That fabric is great and you set it off so well. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the Katie Jump Rope squares. And I'm with you - a little cutting, a little sewing - works much better for me. I think that's why I like the quilt along so much!

Just love the radio series. Can't wait to see what you do with the Katie Jump Rose fabric. I made a quilt with it and am not sure how to finish it.

Love your mini-quilts! Do they count as 4 of your 5? Did you quilt those with a darning or walking foot? Cutting fabric always feels so good - knowing that putting it back together will make a beautiful something!

I love your little quilts. That radio fabric is so neat, and now that I see all of the dotted fabrics, it makes me want to use mine. I already have 1.5" and 2" strips cut from over 150 different dotted fabrics. Cutting is one of my favorite parts of quilting.

The mini-quilts are awesome. Your son must be tickled. I'd love to have some fabric pieces on the wall. Maybe for my next project.
And man, oh man, are those some impressive stacks of cut fabrics. Can't wait to see what these turn into.

I love it when you can find a fabric the speaks to your life and you can use it to inspire you/remind you daily. We just moved into our home (9 mos. + 1 baby ago) and I am excited for the years to come as I watch my kids grow into their own beings.

Also, do you plan to, err, frame the mini-quilts? If not, I'm curious to know how you will hang them. You know me, a practical gal always looking for practical advice :)

Beth,
I tried to hang them as is, but they hung a little limp...I probably should have added some interfacing to make them a bit stiffer. So I decided to use some frames that are simply pieces of glass. I put some acid free paper as the background and then sandwiched in the quilts. I'll post a picture so you can see how they look. I like them better in the frames.

Yeah, sometimes I get on a roll and cut and cut until I've satisfied the urge. Other days when I want to be productive, but can't get involved in too much because of time constraints, I'll go cut my scraps into strips or smaller pieces for another time.

Love the brights. 8^)

How fun for your son! Music is huge in our house as well. It's been such a great influence in our boys' lives.

I love the little quilts!

Hey, if you go to the Quilt Center in Lincoln, you should stop at the Cosmic Cow in the Havelock area. It's a fun little fabric store!
