Sprint for the Finish

CAUTION! (Solidia, don't read on if you want to be surprised!)
If you read my blog regularly you know I love to work on multiple projects simultaneously. Check out that list of works in progress on my sidebar. It's a long one, and it doesn't include all the projects in my head or my inspiration book. I am resigned to the fact that I am a starter and I'm good with that. When it comes to finishing, it's a different story altogether. It helps a bit that I don't like to be late, I try to honor commitments, and I'm crazy competitive. Bottom line....finish something already!
First, a deadline. I signed up for a mini quilt swap on flickr. End of June is the deadline and some of the swappers have already received their quilts. My competitive nature kicked in and with deadline looming I finished my mini quilt for the swap. Solidia likes pink so I dipped into some of my favorite pink fabrics and came up with this. The back is pieced with some scraps from the front.

I did a bit of embellishing, ribbon, a button and a bit of decorative stitching. It was fun to try new things. I hope Solidia likes it. I'm not sure about it. I'm struggling about whether to send it or try something new. That would not help with the whole finishing thing...now would it? I need to sleep on it and look at it again in the morning.

Next, a challenge. Peg, at Happy in Quilting is challenging herself to finish 5 tops into quilts by the end of July. She invited folks to join her. I jumped on the finishing bandwagon. Wouldn't it be great to have 5 finished quilts by the end of July! I don't know if mini's count, but I'm going to try to reduce that WIP list on my sidebar by 5 by the end of July. Thanks to Peg, I'm sprinting to the finish!
And to feed my starter personality...some new fabric

These stripes are from our visit to IKEA in Portland. Did I tell you I love that store? No IKEA in or near Kansas City, so I lingered as long as I could. I have an idea brewing for these and some other striped fabric in my stash.

Don't you love these fabrics? Aunt Grace 30's reproductions. I scored these on ebay right before our trip. Great price and 36 fat quarters. I have so many ideas for these...it paralyzes me. I may have to just oogle them for awhile.
EDIT: I forgot to add, Jackie at Canton Village Quilt Works is having the best giveaway...she will machine quilt a quilt for the winner. Is that not the best? Head on over and check it out.

I'm so glad you stopped by my blog, always great to see a sweet comment from you. Great idea about finishing. I have a lot of WIPs going too. What do you search for on EBAY? I want to find fabric but I don't even know where to start. Any tips?

Jacquie you put me to shame...have ssooo many tops in my cupboard. Love the colours of the mini..outstanding.
What is your issue with it? My take on it is teh green ribbon is a little distracting but then Solidia may love that. I guess I have a thing about the simplicity of your pieces...they are no frills so to speak and make quite the statement.Of course it is probably not that so please let us know!!!

Hope a happy Father's Day was had by your husband and family...have totally drawn a blank on his name...sorry!

Oh - I am so with you on the "starting a project and fizzling out before I finish it"! I think the quilt looks great!

I love the miniquilt, and I think the ribbon and the button look great! It's a nice contrast.

I'm not good at finishing quilts either, I think it's because I'm somewhat intimidated by the quilting-process :-( But I'll be buying myself a walking-foot any day now, and maybe I'll join in the challenge -eventhough I only have 2 unfinished quilttops.

Love love love the 1930's fabrics!!

Love the mini quilt - the sage green embellishments really finish it off! I am a big Ikea lover too - I must see if our local store has those nice stripes in!

I like the mini - send it on. Great idea to do embelishing with the ribbon. Love the 30's fabric too - and yes, I'm going to join that challenge - i have lots that I need to finish.

I love, love the mini-quilt. The colors with the contrasting ribbon are lovely.
You're brave to take on the challenges publicly. I was thinking this morning that I have to finish hand-stitching a binding. Now I'm inspired to finish one more WIP.
Glad you're back.

I love the mini! Send it and "start" or finish (if you feel the need) something else. I know what you mean about having lots of WIP...sometimes it helps if I purchase some really inspirational fabric and then tell myself that I can't work on it until I finish two things.

Oh and shopping for fabric on ebay...a dangerous thing for a fabricholic!

IKEA and the ocean!?! That was a fabulous trip! lol LOVE the stripes.

I am so with you on being a starter. I'll be watching from here...cheering you on for at least 5 finishes!

You HAVE to send Solidia her pink piece! It is ADORABLE!!! Love your embellishments. You've always got a great look going on!

I also love to start, and not always finish. I just have so many that I want to make! I must say, that challenge has me intrigued! I just might sign up.

I'm personally trying to get 5 quilts finished before I start any more. (that would give me a clean slate, quilt-wise.) but I am weak and I doubt I will do it. (that and being on a fabric diet at the same time is just craziness.)

oh, and those 30's fat quarters are sooooooooooooo nice!!!!!!!!!!

That mini quilt is gorgeous! But I must admit that the fabric shots might have stolen the show... at least from my perspective... but again, I'm in LOVE with the Aunt Grace 30s repro fabrics! They're compltely swoonable! Great job :)

I doubt I can finish five tops, but I bet I can finish five projects... I love (and need) a good challenge sometimes.

I love your mini quilt! Do Not start another - it is so adorable =) I have the opposite problem - I have to finish something before I move on to the next. I do have two tops right now and no backing - but that will change real soon - I just can't handle it =)

oooo great challenge. i may have to join you ladies. I have to figure out if I have enough time- but they would be just the quilt tops- no quilting so it may be possible for me.

By the way I will be sending the giveaway soon. I am so bad about sending things out.

Love your mini too!

This fabric is great! I'm looking for a dark purple/white stripe. Have you seen anything like that? In an homage to your Wonky Radio Flyer, I'm going to try something similar for my son's school auction. Their colors are purple and white, hence the search for that stripe. As always, I just LOVE your quilts. You are an inspiration. Keep up the great work!!
