Sophisticated Baby

What's better for sewing than a rainy 4th of July? And what's better for getting yourself together than making a quilt for babies and parents? The day and the activity combined were just what I needed. The KC Modern Quilt Guild members are making a set of quilts to donate to a local hospital's NICU and I volunteered to make 12 blocks in any colorway. Vicki slyly assigned me to the lilac/brown group. She knows I don't do purple....a gentle push out of my comfort zone. I used a brown (with alot of gray in it) organic cotton, Kona snow, and some linen curtains from IKEA as the solids and a few purples that I acquired recently. I know, it's more neutrals than purple, but it's a start. I chose to make a quilt like this one. I hope it's not too un-baby, though I'd sure be proud to cover a little one with this. I didn't mean to disappear for so long. Thanks for all the emails, prayers and good wishes. I wish I could tell you that I have answers. There are only more questions. No news is good news as they say.

Just fabulous! And I very much prefer baby quilts that don't look like baby quilts :)

You have a knack for putting colors together that just work! As quilters/crafters we can make a different in the lives of others, even if it's just to bring a smile or show we care. I had to go back and read your last post. Somehow I missed it. Best wishes for your husband's good health, and answers!!!

Your work is always inspiring to see! I think one other time you made a baby quilt that you put "baby" fabric on the back for baby with the sophisticated top. I thought that was a clever compromise.

This is a perfect one for a baby. I agree with, Joan, unbaby like sometimes are the best baby quilts. Hope that you have answers soon for your hubby. Prayers are continuing to go you way.

You always chose such great fabrics and put them together in cool ways. I am envious of your rainy sew day.

I know many babies and families would love your quilt!

My husband also had a some health issues recently and I can so relate to the "no answers, only more questions" position. It seemed every answer we got generated five more questions! Frustrating. But, we got through it and he is doing great now. Sending positive thoughts that you and your husband will have a similar outcome.

So happy to see you post again. Praying that no news remains good news. I love what you did with the purple. I am not a purple person either but this is beautiful. It works!

I have a few clients that make *un-baby* quilts and they are just the best! I love yours too, Jacquie!

I am so sorry that your husband has health concerns. I had to scroll down and catch up a bit...I've been lacking in the blogging department, too. He and you and your whole family will sincerely be in my thoughts and prayers.

Many hugs to you....

That's a wonderful mod quilt for a baby, Jacquie. I'm sorry you are still in waiting mode and yes, holding onto the no news is good news mantra is the way to go, however I hope that he will receive some answers so he can get on the recovery road soon. Best wishes.

That's beautiful! It's funny you say you don't do purple because I always think of your blog as purple...maybe those flowers are pink!

I absolutely LOVE the colors, very relaxing! Love the purple, I find I have a hard time using purple and you did it so elegantly.

Beautiful quilt, Jacquie... soft yet bold, minimalist yet intriguing.

Hope you both get some solid answers and very good news soon.

Well, I love purple, but it never would have occurred to me to pair it with brown. I must say, though, you have found the right shades of both colors. Looking really nice!

My brother recently found a peach-pit-sized lump in his neck that didn't go away with antibiotics. CT showed an enlarged lymph node that didn't look good. His doc, however, just didn't totally buy the interpretation and decided to excise it, because a biopsy wouldn't have been enough.

Turns out it was a lipoma (fatty pad) that had wrapped around a lymph node and was totally benign. One case in which CT scans, though very helpful, were not really accurate.

Don't know if this helps or makes things worse, but I'm praying you both have answers soon, and that they are as happy as my brother's.

Great fabrics Jacquie...and your quilt design is perfect. I think 'un-baby' quilts are best. They grow up with the child better, so I think you made a good choice!

I'm cheering you and yours on!!!

oh wow, I love it. you + purple puts a smile on my face.

I don't know what's going on (behind on reading apparently), hope you will find answers soon.

I will certainly say a prayer for your family today and hope that the news you are waiting for will be good.
Your quilts inspire me to try something out of the box, kind of modern and fun. The more I look at your quilts the more I love them. Take care~

It's funny to me that you saypurple is out of your comfort zone... It goes so well with the colors on your blog... :-)
I have a similar stack of fabrics awaiting my scissors...for myself. (some year) so yummy.
Purple is working for you, Jacquie!

it looks like a perfect quilt to last through from baby to grown up. Wonderful.

I hope all is well with your husband's health and the answers to the questions turn out to be positive.

what a lovely and sophisticated color palette! nicely done, Jacquie! i'm not a fan of purple, either, so it would be a challenge to me as well. but it looks like you pulled it off beautifully as always!

I don't like babyish baby quilts....but really now...they do need to have COLOR in them!!! Are you SURE you cut that purple fabric???? ;-)

as a NICU mom myself... all those donated things are much loved.
