Double Swirling Medallion
The Double Swirling Medallion (a bigger version of the Swirling Medallion quilt in the book) is finally done. Had some quiet time late last night to finish sewing on the binding.
I especially like the overlapping spiraled quilting.
It needs a quick wash and then it's ready to cuddle with on the sofa. It's not huge, but the perfect cuddle size for a short person like me.

I'm trying to wrap my head around how you picked the two medallions to the background. Presumably you had them up on your design wall with the negative space taped off, right? Then did you measure chunks out straight to the sides in each direction, and attach as needed? how did you handle the 'overlap' between the two shapes? Can you describe how you went about it?
Not that I plan to try and replicate this -- but just really impressed and puzzled. Thank you!!

I started with a single medallion and thought I was going to stop there, but I like big, usable quilts and at the time I didn't need a baby quilt. So, I make a second medallion. I placed all the squares (the medallions on the design wall and then simply filled in with background squares. It may be hard to see, but the entire quilt is made up of 5" squares. Hope this helps. I see -- I didn't realize it was all 5" squares. That makes a lot of sense.
I'll have to look more closely at that pattern in the book -- up close, it's captivating how it combines precise and improv triangles in the squares. (I have to wonder -- do babies and kids who sleep and play with quilts like these have a better grasp of math when they get older? I have to think they would).

Wow, this is a great quilt. It has sparked some ideas in my head. I have a couple of swoon blocks that I can use to make something like this and I have a couple of convergence blocks I can also use to do something similar to this. It's the background fabric and the amazing quilting that makes this project AMAZING! Thanks for the inspiration!

are these concentric circles or a spiral? Love this quilt.
Love this quilt and the quilting is jaw dropping. As soon as you said it was all 5" squares the construction sort of fell into place for me. I'd love to see the quilt back. Do you mark the quilt for this type of quilting and, if so, what do you use for the marking? I really have to get your book!!

I only mark the initial circle for the spiral...I use a clover marking pencil...after that I use the edge of my walking foot as a guide and around and around I go. Dizzying, but it works.
Okay, lately, I've been thinking a lot about this style of quilting and thought that was what I would do myself. But I wasn't sure about the marking pencil - to date I've not marked any quilting patterns and have been a little hesitant.
