How to Make Moving Fun?

We are closing on the condo we purchased back in January on Monday right after I get home from Buffalo and the move happens three days after that on Thursday. I've been successfully avoiding thinking about or doing anything about moving until today. I've put off packing until now and I'm leaving Thursday morning for a weekend of teaching. I woke up a bit panicked today, so I went into hyper packing mode today. I've got my boxes, packing material, tape and my dogged determination to pack like a mad woman.
I'm not sure there is a way to make packing fun, but I thought maybe it could be fun for my readers and I'll live vicariously through you.  What about a surprise giveaway?  I have no idea what it might be...a quilt, a bunch of fabric, a book, some white elephant I don't feel like packing?  Maybe all three?  You'll have to wait and see.

Here's what I'm thinking....how about guessing how many boxes it will take me to pack everything in this 1000 square foot apartment. I'll tell you now, my stash will probably not go into boxes, so take that into account.  I'm just counting boxes, not anything else.

Leave a comment with your guess.  If you're a no reply commenter, leave an email address where I can contact you.  I won't go searching for you.  If you have a great moving story, or packing, moving, unpacking advice feel free to share that too.  You never know what might be rewarded.

First person to guess closest to the correct number of boxes wins.  I may have some other winners too depending on how I'm feeling that day.

Bruno is freaking out and has taken to hiding in the bathroom to avoid the chaos.  Wish me luck!

When we move I am always astonished at the number of boxes and how little you can actually put into one. So I am going to say you will use 130 boxes. We are moving next fall - leaving friends, family and home to go to a nicer climate and retire. It is a huge adventure and I am so excited to start this next chapter of my life. I don't want to leave, but that doesn't mean I don't want to go. It's a bit crazy-making that way. But to retire at my age! (I'll be 52) To have all that unstructured time! The sewing I can do! The writing! The walking! Sure we won't be rich by anymeans dollar-wise, but that's not how I count being rich. I also don't care how many boxes it takes, 'cause I'm movin' on!

Good luck on your move. I'm guessing 92.

I'll guess 90 (yowza, that's a lot).

When I was a kid we moved on Halloween and were, unfortunately, still moving when the sun set. My mom hated it, but hey - it's a great way to meet all your neighbors, right?

I am guessing 44 boxes. My moving story - after having lived in the same place for 30 years, I moved across 11 time zones with two suitcases that weighed whatever the airline allowed to check in. Look at your stuff and think - which is more painful, to pack and move it, or to live without it? It worked for me… Wishing you luck with your not-so-radical move!! RR

43, it's a good prime number. Glad to see your got the boxes from Home Depot, so much cheaper than the storage places.

My guess is 69, hoping you're a very organized person with not too much clutter. Take care.

I'll guess 52 boxes!

My Mum would be my moving "hero" since she moved from London, England to Adelaide, Australia with a 1 and a 2 year old by boat. This was at a time when air travel was expensive, and my parents couldn't afford for us all to fly, so my dad went ahead. It took a month. We were all seasick. I was the 2 year old and I remember dolphins, stopping at Sri Lanka, and the cocos and keeling islands. Mum was planning to get out at Egypt and see the pyramids, but there was some unrest at the time so we did not see them.

Good luck with your move!

My guess in 58 boxes. Because I know it would take about triple that to move me, but your place looks much cleaner/less cluttery! Ahhh. Well, best wishes!

Kresta said...

34 boxes.

The best thing we ever did was hire movers to move all the heavy stuff. Good thing too, the day we moved the temperature was somewhere north of 110 degrees and my husband's prized possession is a custom bbq that weighs about 400 lbs! By the end of the day the movers were threatening to 'fall' in the pool - i think they were hoping to have a beer in hand when they did!

HI!!! How fun!!! For us!!! I will guess 179 boxes!!! Thanks for the fun!!!

I have to get my guess in too. I haven't moved for 40 years and have no realistic idea of the number of boxes you will use. My guess is 73 boxes. If I were to move in the near future, I am sure I could fill that many boxes with my quilting stash.lol Good luck with your move!

I will guess you will need 62 boxes. I moved twice and it was not fun, but it was a good way to get rid of clutter.

Nancy said...

Hmm. Im gonna guess 112 boxes. Moving isn't funny. We have moved 16 times in 41 years. Im done. Good luck.

Brittany said...

How many boxes will it take? One, Two...how about one hundred and two (102).
Hopefully you do not pack like my husband. When we moved quickly he just dumped stuff in a box. He also held a box with one hand and used the other to guide/sweep/knock stuff in.

My funniest moving story was when my sister helped me move the last time and after a few boxes of quilting she started marking them "yep, more quilting" "you guessed it, still more quilting" - we had a good laugh. I'm guessing you'll have 85 boxes.

Patti said...

Moves are exciting even if they are a lot of work! We moved 5 years ago. My fabric stash took up an embarassing and eye-opening number of boxes. Beat out the kitchen hands down, lol! So if you're not packing fabric your box numbers should be not so bad! I'm guessing 46. And wish you an uneventful move with pizza and beer at the other end!

Shirley said...

I tried to get my son to give me afvice on the number of boxes since he moves people for a living and he was no help. He had all these questionshe wanted me to answer like how many Bookshelves does she have. So I will go with 53 boxes since you've moved recently you already purged once. Moving advice, label, label, label. Moving nightmare, everyone has them but no one really wants to hear them before they move, so good luck.
Hope it is your last one for a very long time.

I say 103 - this would have been a good time to make an early comment, but I feel good about 103.

I did NOT feel good about a military move from an off-base apartment (on the LAST day of our short-term lease) to on-post housing at Ft. Riley Kansas on December 22, 1989. We had plane tickets for the next day to fly home for Christmas.

It was 23 degrees BELOW ZERO!!!

It was the coldest temperature ever recorded at the Kansas City National Weather station. The movers called to say that their truck runs on diesel fuel and the fuel had turned to "jello" and they wouldn't be able to come. I was beside myself - we had been overseas for the previous three Christmases and I was not going to miss the holidays at home! I have no idea what I said to those people, but they said they would try and they made it!! They drove the truck into a heated warehouse and eventually it started. They (very) quickly packed up our little apartment and we got everything into the new place and survived the night even though it was below freezing INSIDE for three hours after they were gone.

The next day, all our new neighbors came out with their hairdryers and got our car engine warm enough to start. I have never been so happy to land in the South as I was that Christmas - no snow for us there - thank goodness.

Heres to smooth rolling tape and light as a feather boxes. Enjoy your new place!!

Brenna said...

Let's go with 110. I've moved many times, and it always takes a LOT more boxes than you'd think!

Sharmond said...

55 boxes. I have no idea, but wanted to participate. I love your quilting designs and enjoy your blog!

Kristin said...

Wishing you luck with your move! As someone who moved something like 12 times in 13 years I don't envy you! You really start thinking, "Do I need to pack this again, or can I just get rid of it?". I hope you have fewer than 63 boxes.

Denise said...

Based on the fact that you have moved once already and downsized a bit to get here, I will say 80 boxes. I am currently in the middle of a move myself, but only across town and the other house needs a bit of work, so the move can be done over a 2 month span. It's almost worse than a quick move. Good luck and many hugs and biscuits to Bruno!

Judy in Michigan said...

I've moved 13 times and it never ceases to amaze me with how many boxes it takes. Prof. movers are the best but it's funny what they do with odd things - like if you don't have it in a box, they find a box and start putting things in it - even things that were meant for the garbage man!! Empty bottles, recycling papers, cans, anything!! My guess: 139 boxes.

Colleen said...

We have packed half of our 2100 sq ft house and it has taken 58 boxes. Apparently I have a lot of books. They are most,y book boxes. I haven't packed the kitchen yet though, and that takes a lot of boxes. I'm going to guess 67.

Remember, a spoonful of sugar helps everything, according to Mary Poppins. Good luck with the move!

I'll guess 51 boxes. It always takes more than you think. I don't have a good moving story. My dad worked for the government at the airport and we had to move every couple of years growing up but it was the kind of thing that the movers came in, packed everything and put it on the truck. You just had to make sure that they weren't packing the trash! Good luck with the move.

Poor Bruno! My guess is 175.

For our last move, my husband's company sent movers to pack our things. It sounds wonderful, but it was a nightmare. Two of them whined the entire time, and none of them cared what went in what box. It took me forever to unpack! One of them even packed the potatoes, in summer. I found them in a box marked pillows.

I lived in two states for a year, carting my crafting supplies back and forth every two weeks. It was so nice to be able to pack it all up and move back home, have my sewing machine with me all the time, and be back where my kids are settled. So I say 55 boxes, as even that total will be exhausting.

We moved our daughter cross town last fall. It was chaos. They didn't try to pack a lot so we were using whatever containers we could find to move stuff. They had some broken down boxes from their move a year earlier which we managed to fill rapidly. It was worse on the other end though. The big stuff we pretty much knew where it went but all the stuffed stuff we couldn't remember where it was so we had to go through every box to find their bedding, clothes, even dishes and food stuff. So I'm glad you are packing and hopefully labeling. Have fun!

I'm not good at guessing games. I'll say 57 boxes. But I have a GREAT moving story.

When my husband and I moved (from Buffalo, coincidentally), my parents were living three hours away from us. My mother kept calling, to see if there was anything she could do to help... but at three hours' distance, there's not an awful lot one can do to help someone pack a box.

Moving day arrived, and I don't know about you, but I always feel like I'm in great shape until I start packing the truck and then there seem to be 100 things left undone. The plan was to be done and at my in-laws for dinner. My brothers-in-law came up for the day and helped shlepp boxes, but we were still behind, and ultimately decided to take a break and eat dinner out, then finish the last few things and head out later than planned.

In the middle of all the chaos, my parents call to check how things are going. My DH talks to them, and says everything is fine. (Remember? They're THREE HOURS away. Even if they got in the car that very moment, we'd be in good shape by the time they reached us.)

Well, late at the end of the day, dog tired, we finally hit the road and pull up at my in-laws', an hour's drive away. It is long past dinner time.

Who is sitting in their living room, but MY PARENTS. SURPRISE! When they made that last call, they were on the Thruway, 10 minutes from my house, a very reasonable helping distance.

To this day, I still don't think my mother understands why it was all so upsetting to me.

I remain resolute in my dislike of surprises.

Oh my, So hard to guess. I know last time we moved it seemed like the boxes were endless. However, not everything goes in boxes. So many numbers I liked have been used. Even so there were too many posts so I didn't see them all. I'm going to go with 70 boxes.

I've moved quite a few times, but the last time I'm hoping was the last time.

I do have to say to you that I'm JUST starting to come down from the high that I've been in most of the day because of your workshop. It's going to be tough tomorrow getting back to my regular life. I've promised myself an hour in the studio. :)

Good luck moving and I hope you use ALL 70 BOXES!!!

Our last move involved my husband driving from CO to OH in a moving van, pulling the car, with our two cats in the cab with him. It was a very windy drive across Kansas. I got to fly with an infant. It was, of course, 'the last move we will ever make'. We'll see about that.

I'm guessing 137 boxes. My moving story was many years ago when I was moving the last of my childhood items from my parents house down in Florida up to then current home in Michigan. I recruited my best friend who owned a larger car than I (a Honda hatchback, I believe) to help me schlep it all back. When I was leaving my folks house, my mom insists I make room for my cello. Since the car was already full at that point, we happily strapped it to the ROOF of the car covered in a tarp and secured with duct tape and bungie cords. We drove all the way to Michigan like that! People mustof thought we were crazy because the cello case looked like a brown coffin.
I hope the move went well!
