This quilt came home a few weeks ago, but I haven't had time to share it. It's with a bunch of other lovely work in the new Modern Patchwork magazine. I love to design from my experience and this simple take on a tumbler quilt is from my memories of lava lamps. I was obsessed by them, loved daydreaming and staring at them as the lava moved and changed shapes.
I really enjoyed reading this issue, especially an article on mid-century inspired free motion quilting by Kevin Kosbab.
My apartment is in chaos and filled with boxes and packing stuff so the only place to take a picture was on the balcony and it's not big enough to spread out a quilt, so I threw it on a chair and shot this. I am going to miss having this view. We've been really lucky living with a spectacular view of the Chicago skyline.
Maybe this quilt would be good for the
"make moving fun" giveaway? Have you shared your guess yet? It's a nice lap size, so good for a movie marathon on a chilly spring evening. I've had so much fun reading the stories and getting some great tips, so thanks for a smile when my back and neck were hurting. I've broken one dish so far and haven't even moved yet. Hopefully, that's not a sign of things to come.
I'm heading for Buffalo tomorrow. My class is full, but I'm sure there is room to come to one of the two lectures I'm giving on Friday. If you're in the area, come and chat, see a bunch of quilts and talk quilting with me! I'm sure the folks at the

Packing update:
I've packed all the books, the guest bathroom, and all the contents of the buffet (all my sets of China and all those dishes I never seem to use.) Tackling the kitchen today!
I love the colors in this one and that peek of the backing is divine.
ReplyDeleteHow do you have time to blog?! I'm impressed. Good luck with the kitchen-that is always a chore. I wish I was going to be in Buffalo! Y'all will have fun. My best moving advice?? Schedule a massage for a few days after moving in. Something relaxing to look forward to and help with soothing those tired muscles! Thinking of you, friend!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun quilt. I can't quite tell -- did you make an effort to pattern-match the two adjacent tumbler pieces, or just let seams fall where they would? It looks great. I haven't made any quilts that use the same print in adjacent pieces because of nagging worry about this (and also because I haven't made all that many quilts!), but I feel like it would be easy to obsess over while cutting. Thanks!

ReplyDeletelet the seams fall where they may. life is too short for matching prints in a quilt like this. save that for something heirloom or a show quilt.

ReplyDeleteOh I am sorry you broke a dish! I am admittedly weird about my dishes- but any time I break any of my prized glass in my kitchen I cry- and I almost never cry about anything! I hope you survive the rest of the move unscathed and so do your dishes. I love the quilt, I totally see the lava lamp theme- and the colors are perfect for that- whoever wins this will be very lucky indeed! :)

ReplyDeleteMy guess is 73 boxes. Label, label, label - even the obvious "Of course I'll remember what's in this box!" You may not. And make sure the coffee pot, coffee, filters and cups are easy to find. Makes the first morning much less stressful!

Ug. I thought I posted my funny moving story yesterday, but it didn't take.
ReplyDeleteMy parents like to build house so I moved a lot as a kid (three times in high school), and we always moved ourselves. You quickly learn to let go of things when you move yourself that often. At the start of each move, my mom would always say that this was going to be move that we were organized. Ineviatably, panic would set in and she'd start running around the house yelling, "We have too much stuff!" while shoving things in large black garbage bags.

ReplyDeleteOOOOOHHHHHH Now I love tumbler blocks. I never saw the fascination with them till now. I use my vintage Lava lamp all the time. Actually got in a bidding war with a 14 year old boy at an estate auction to get it.

ReplyDeleteLove this quilt. Interesting that you call this design Lava Lamp because when I was growing up in Chicago near Damen/Irving Pk/Lincoln there was a Lava Lamp factory at Irving Pk and Paulina. This quilt brings back great memories of my old stomping grounds.

I love the quilt! I'm afraid of heights. It makes me SO queasy that the quilt is over the railing. I love Chicago :) I took my daughter on a trip there in 2007. It was the spur of the moment and we came on St Pat. Day/weekend. They turned the river green, and she loved that. However, it wasn't too fun walking through some drunken college-=aged people. We also went to what I thought was the Sears building? And at the top they have that window where you can step out and look down. Her dad went with us, and they were loving it, I stood in the middle of the room, like a freak, with my eyes closed and tried not to cry. Even after all that nonsense, my daughter loved the trip. We live by Ann Arbor MI. Anyways, the quilt looks awesome a million feet above the earth :)
ReplyDeleteI've already put in my guess so I won't do another, but the last time I moved was 25 years ago. I live in a condo that consists of 13 buildings and I was moving from one building to another. It was so close that I thought it would be a snap. I didn't so much as pack boxes as just carry 'stuff' from one building to the next. What a mess. Fortunately, I hadn't sold the first unit yet so I had plenty of time but it was an experience I don't ever want to repeat. If there is a next time I'll be a lot more organized!
