Something isn't right with this. For the life of me I can't figure it out. I cut a few strips of black to see what it would look like as sashing and border. It's fine, but something still bothers me. Do you see it? I'm getting ready to rip these apart. Not a good day in the sewing room.

I like it - maybe go wider? Or go with a dark red. But I do like the black - very retro.

Where the black and white fabric is cut makes a difference in whether it looks like black with white, or white with black. So it almost looks like two different fabrics are being used.
I like it!
I like the black! I think it looks great.
To me it looks like there is too much white between the black sashing. Can you add a red border onto each block and then sash in black??
I agree with Nancy. Too much white around the block before the black sashing. The blocks look too isolated rather than a single unit.
The polka dots are wonderful. What about sashing twice as wide or half as wide?
I agree. Whatever is bothering us has to do with the white. Too wide or something. And too plain right next to the plain sashing.
Black ric rac on the white?
I like the black. I agree with Nancy and Jen that the width of the white is too wide next to the black sashing. I hope you find a way to work it out.
i think the black is too stark for the blocks...maybe red sashing with black cornerstones? i do think the white is distracting the eye...can you trim the white down so it's not so wide? although if you do that you can't add it back...ALTHOUGH...IF you trimmed the white, added a red, and then did black it could work. Did that make sense?

I like the black it frames the block what about making it not as wide, maybe half the width???
it looks great to me, I'm useless at this kind of thing, but as eveyone else has suggested more black, too much white, I'm thinking how about white corner stones..
This might not help, but I'd skip the black sashing altogether and leave it all white and maybe put another "frame" around it all in a large strip but not plain black, maybe a fabric with movement on it, marbled black or red or something like that!!!
This is what happens when you ask... You get all sorts of answers and are not sure which one to follow!!!
Good Luck!!!
PS Your way of doing these wonky blocks has been in my mind for the past week..... Gotta do something, but what, and especially when!!!!!???????????
maybe black it's not the right colour... the blocks are really nice... don't rip it all up!!!
Have you tried something totally different? A green? or a blue? as long as it has the same colour 'value'...
or maybe joining the block together without border?
I'm late chiming in, but just wanted to say that I love the blocks ... I agree that maybe the black is a little too strong ... something with movement might work better for you.
I actually liked them too when you just had them sitting next to each other in the previous post!
Good luck figuring it out!

I like it the way it is, but I look forward to seeing what you come up with to make it right. (I know that feeling, "there isn't something quite right", that's for sure....I'm dealing with it on a king size quilt. ugh.)
Looks to me like the black is highlighting the wonkiness of the white but not in a good way if that makes sense? It almost looks uneven but not in the way you would want it to.
This would have been a good problem to ask our flickr group Jacquie, we are doing that now, asking each other what we think of what we are doing etc its very supportive.
These blocks are screaming for a red sashing! There's just a tiny bit in the actual blocks, but red sashing - oh my - it would make everything pop! It's lovely, and I hope you have fun with it!
I'm in the minority here in that I think the black sashing makes the quilt look MORE busy. It looks more modern and fresh with lots of white. White sashing might even spread out the red and black and give an even more "Denyse Schmidt" look (which is good and appropriate IMHO). What about a change of scale by putting little red corners on your blocks that would make on point squares when all the blocks are assembled? Or white sashing with red or black squares at the intersections? It would still be busy, but maybe in a more dynamic way due to the change in scale. I can almost imagine little red on-point squares between teh blocks and a white or red-with-lots-of-white-in-it-print border and red rick rack in the seam between the center and the border, or maybe a dog tooth border:red on white. Whatever you do, I really like you blocks and hope you don't have to rip them all apart.
