A Kick in the Ass

This book has been on the shelf in my studio for about 6 months. I received it from fabric designer Amy Schimler. War of Art is by Steven Pressfield, the author of The Legend of Bagger Vance. While he wrote it from his perspective as an author, it is for everyone who wants to achieve anything. It's about learning why we prevent ourselves from doing what we want to do, or need to do. -
Here are a couple of the many pages that I have dogeared to read again and again.

"Procrastination is the most common manifestation of Resistance because it's the easiest to rationalize. We don't tell ourselves, "I'm never going to write my symphony." Instead we say, "I am going to write my symphony; I'm just going to start tomorrow."

Rationalization is Resistance's right hand man. Its job is to keep us from feeling the shame we would feel if we truly faced what cowards we are for not doing our work. But rationalization has its own sidekick. It's that part of our psyche that actually believes what rationalization tells us. It's one thing to lie to ourselves. It's another thing to believe it.

I don't have time to work out today....have you said that to yourself like I have? I convinced myself to believe it too.

...Never forget: This very moment, we can change our lives. There never was a moment, and never will be, when we are without the power to alter our destiny. This second, we can turn the tables on Resistance.
This second, we can sit down and do our work.

So, this second I'm going to get on the treadmill...and when I get off step into the studio and continue to do my work.

I have the power to change my life.
You do too.

The giveaway...I'm putting together some great fabric bundles. Just comment to enter. I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Wow, that really hit home for me. I have always had a fairly major procrastination problem, and I have recently realized that , for me, procrastination stems directly from fear. Specifically, fear that I will not be capable of doing as good a job as I want to do. So, um, yeah, Type A personality here, for sure :-) Thanks for the thought-provoking post.

Just do it! (Sounds like a commercial to me, but so true!)

I'm going to have to check out that book. One of the reasons I started a blog was to keep me on task. I committed to sewing or being in my sewing room at least 15 minutes a day and I have to write about what I did. I have gotten more done this year because of it. Thanks for being an inspiration.

I'll work out after Christmas...I have too much to do. I also hate to work out when anyone is at home...silly isn't it. I know. Now where can I get a copy of that book?!

Hmm. "Procrastination" simply isn't in my vocabulary. I just don't have enough hours in a day to do it all, so "prioritize" is my word. We really do accomplish what we want to do. Thanks for your giveaway!

I saw this and just went WOW. I have all this creative energy, dabble in everything, start things, get ideas, sometimes finish them, sometimes not.. and I often feel like I'm afraid of really committing to it, if that makes any sense. I'm looking to see if they have this book on half.com right now! Thank you!

UUUUmm - I'm tellin'! You said the "a"- word!

Oh how I pray that I'll magically develop anorexia only on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8am to 8pm and OCD cleaning on Fridays so my house will be clean for the weekend. Perhaps this book might be a healthier, more realistic option for me?

This is the second review I've seen of this book this week. Do you believe in signs, Jacquie?

Procrastination is my favorite pet! Always there when I need it. So sounds like I need to send it to the curb. At least for some things! Ha. The above comment about the life of a Mom. Oh yes always something, someone that need us and somewhere to be. Life is good albeit crazy sometimes!!

Hmmmmm.....think I had better pick that book up. Maybe though, we have too much on our plates and there is the need to simplify. It is easy to get overwhelmed and lose focus when there are too many things to focus on.

Thank you for the kick and the reminder to pull that book off my bookshelf and read it again! I have a first edition copy I bought in 2002 and I re-read it every so often ... as your entry hit a nerve of reality, it is clearly time to read it again!

Great advise and wise words! I'm always making excuses to myself about why I can't make time for myself, which is a way of being kind to oneself. The daily to-do list grows and grows but those things which would benefit myself always get pushed to the bottom. Today I am going to stop, take time to leash up my dogs for a walk, get outside and enjoy the fresh air. Thank you for sharing this insight and am glad to see I'm not alone!

I love the play on words title -
I'll have to look into this book. I love inspirational books and this one sounds good.
When I don't want to do something, sometimes I set a timer for 15 minutes. For me about getting it going sometimes.

I'll be on my way to get this book. Just those few quotes really affected me and how I have been fooling myself into not pursuing my dreams. Thanks for this! I needed a kick in the butt.
