Give me a hammer, a screwdriver and a mission and you never know what might happen! I dismantled one of the metal shelving units in the studio and with a herculean push to separate two of the rails, not only did I slice the tips of three fingers, I also sent a couple of metal rails flying across the room. The fingertips are healing, there's a slice in the wall, and one of the rails hit the back of my chair and left a nasty scratch. This is what I ended up with. I made the unit shorter, shrunk the space between shelves and made the top into an ironing surface so I don't have to have the ironing board up at all times. It's a bit less claustrophobic without that tall shelf. As Nate Berkus says, in a small space things need to do double duty.
Of course I created a new problem, the chair needed something to cover that scratch.
No problem! I grabbed a bit of fabric, traced a pattern and made a chair cover to hide the scratch and you know what? I think I'm going to make a couple of covers for the balcony chairs and maybe even for the metal chairs in the dining room. What a great way to decorate for the holidays!
Speaking of cover ups...I cover my sewing machines religiously. Sewing rooms are notoriously dusty and I try to protect my machines whenever they're not sewing.
One of the projects I did on Sew It All TV was a quick, easy sewing machine cover. Well, for TV there are loads of step outs that need to be made. I only have two sewing machines, but now, thanks to the magic of television I have EIGHT extra sewing machine covers.
I made all the step outs into finished covers, but I can't use them, so I decided to share them with you. Do you need a cover for your machine? Want to give one as a gift? They're made to fit a Bernina 156 not my giant 820, so they should fit most sewing machines.
I'll draw eight random winners on Wednesday...that is if there are more than 8 of you who want them.
Finished two quilt tops this weekend. Now to clean the floor so I can baste!
Comments are now closed....choosing the winners!

Great sewing machine covers! Making one has definitely been on my list, but haven't gotten around to making one. And your green and blue color scheme would match my sewing room perfectly!
arbendlin@gmail.com
A cover is on my list of things to make, but things for me always end up at the bottom of my list. I'd love to win one. :-)
Also, love the double duty shelf/ironing surface. And Nate Berkus.
I just wanted to say that I love your storage/ironing station. What a great idea!!

Hope you fingers didn't bleed on any fabric!
I'd love to be 'in it to win it' - thanks for the chance x
You have transformed your sewing room to a lovely place with beatiful fabrics. I love your sewing machine cover.
Love keeping up with you through your blog. Would love one of your machine covers! Miss you in KC!
Not sure if you'll post to New Zealand, but I'll give it a try. Love the big ironing zone...
My sewing machine, in its new home, could certainly use a cute cover up! Hope I win:)
I'd love one! Thank you for offering!
I've really enjoyed watching your new sewing space come together. I may be able to use your "double duty" idea in my own space. I'd love to win a sewing machine cover. Either of my daughters would love a Christmas surprise. Thanks for the chance to win.

I love your new ironing board . . . great idea. And my dear little Bernina could definitely use a new cover. Thanks for the chance!
Those are very cute! I'd love one! I'm sure my little OLD Bernina 801 would love a cute cover like that!
Love the solids and the ironing board on top.
Would love to win a cover (o:
Oh my goodness! After completely wiping down my machine this weekend, I was thinking that I should do something about a cover. I would happily take one of your extras off your hands! Thanks for the chance to win!
Just eight? I think you will need a zillion covers to satisfy everybody. The redo of the room is amazing and very clever. Congrats.
Btw, thanks for the chance to win.
I want one! I would love one! Just noticing how dusty my sewing room gets!
Heather@retroreduxgallery.com
Love your new ironing station. I know I should cover my machine but as yet not made one
What a generous gift! Yes, I would love to have one!
I would be honored to have one of your sewing machine covers. Love the chair cover and ironing board.
I would love a cover! Nice giveaway.
I would love one -- I'm a bad girl who never thinks to cover up the machine.
What an awesome redo! Love that you took it upon yourself to make it fit your area :) Awesome!
I would love to win a sewing machine cover, and that fabric would go so well with my orange sewing table.
Ooh, I would love to win one! I know I should cover my machine, but I am pretty bad about it. I KNOW I would cover it if I had such a pretty cover!
OOH! They are lovely and would look very nice covering my machine!
i do need a cover for my machine...and a good lesson on how to clean out the lint for that matter!! thanks for offering the giveaway
All of your reorganization is reminding me of what it was like to live in a small Brooklyn apartment where everything had multiple purposes. I really like the conversion of your shelves.
I would love a sewing machine cover. Thanks for offering to share them with us.
I have been putting that project off so winning one of your gorgeous covers would be great!! I love what you did for the ironing board!! Thanks!
Love those covers...want one tooo! Thanks for the generous offer. That chair cover is adorable!
I would absolutely LOVE a cover for my sewing machine...been meaning to make one forever. Thank you for the opportunity! Gorgeous!
The covers are very pretty and I have a Bernina 153 - just the right size and it's naked!
I'd love a sewing machine cover! I've been wanting to make one forever, but haven't gotten around to it, so I'd love to get one of yours. Thanks!
My poor machine is naked much of the time, as I've never gotten around to sewing a cover! I appreciate the chance at winning one of your cute covers!
Love the covers! I've been meaning to make myself one, but havent been able to get around to it..too many projects, too little time.
I love it! Thank you for sharing with us!
I don't regularly (ahem, ever cover my machine, but I know it's a good idea, and I'd love to get started with something so pretty. Thanks for the giveaway!
Hope the sliced fingers are healing! I just got a new machine (Clara) and she could certainly use one of those lovely covers. Great idea with the shelving unit!
They're gorgeous - I've needed a sewing machine cover for my lovely Janome for ages! I would give one of your lovelies a good home :) And your shelving unit adjustment is genius - hope your fingers are healing quickly!
Ouch! Hope your fingers get better quickly, and what a creative idea to cover the scratch! I love the idea of having the shelf double as an ironing surface! Very clever!!
I DO need a cover! I have been meaning to make for a long time, and just haven't gotten to it. I would be thrilled to use yours! Thanks for the chance.
LOVE the ironing station! I would love to have a cover for my "Bernie"...he is covered with a pillow case most of the time--haven't been able to fit in making a cover for him yet. The chair cover is gorgeous too!
What a clever use for the storage shelves. I have a unit in my basement that I'm not using any longer. It was destined for my daughter's basement but may be re-purposed in my office/craft room instead.
First of all I want to welcome you to Chicago!!! Love the covers and my machine needs a new one!
Thanks for a chance at a great, unique giveaway.
No good home improvement project is worth anything unless injury and collateral damage is involved, at least that's what I keep telling myself over the years. I love the covers, thanks for the chance to win one!
When I started to read your post I had (sorry) a good laugh... I could so imagine you swinging a hammer and bringing just a bit more power into the action than maybe needed for :-).
Just kidding.
My emotion turned from a laugh to a glimps of envy when seeing your ironing board. Why didn't I have such an idea? That's simply perfect organized. I have to copy that.
And eventually the emotion turned into desire. Desire of a sewing machine cover. You should know that right yesterday my partner (living in another town) installed a sewing machine in his living room as a kind of place where I will sit (and hopefully never leave or so). Only that a sewing machine in a living room is not a worthy of an award interior installment. Maybe such a cover would make the deal. I should think about this and than make a note on my Christmas wishlist: "Present me with a bonus 48 hour"
You made them in my colors - of course I would like the opportunity to have one.
Love the ironing surface and the chair cover. Would love to win a sewing machine cover. Thanks for the giveaway.
Wow...you sure take your remodeling seriously. Sorry to hear about the fingers.
As for machine covers, I have a Bernina and have yet to make a cover myself, so I'd love to have one of yours.
Thanks for the stories of whoa!, makes the rest of us feel good when we do a similiar thing.
I use the same type of shelving unit and board for my ironing and love it! But I do desperately need a sewing machine cover.
Can always use a pretty cover for my machine!
I would LOVE to have one of the sewing machine covers! I admire your work so much, it would be so meaningful to have something you made! Thank you for the giveaway.
I would love one! And I love your new, well not so new anymore, banner!
I was just thinking that I needed to cover my machine. These are just beautiful!
I've built and taken apart shelves like those - dangerous project for sure! I finally figured out that a rubber mallet helps.
I wold love to win a machine cover!
What a great idea with the shelf! I have space at the end of my sewing table that I could totally do this. A new ironing surface AND more storage. Brilliant!
I would love to have a chance to win a sewing machine cover. Something I have never managed to get done for mine.
Love all those great ideas. I have a square of plywood about 36" covered with batting/muslin, it sits on 3 drawer units - makes a wonderful ironing board and is a great height. Might do the chair also like yours, be sure and show us your Christmas one.
That would be so much prettier than my boring plastic covers that I never remember to use!
I LOVE what you did with your shelf. Super, great idea! I sew in the guest room which is rarely used and not too big. My ironing board is always up and my sewing machines are always out. I really need to cover them up! Thanks for your post today!
Love your covers ~ both chair and machine! You get more done in a day than I do in a month! You seem to have made a great adjustment to living in the windy city! Hope you're enjoying it! Thanks for the great blog.
Those are lovely! Thanks for sharing:)
Sorry to hear about your fingers but your shelf looks great now! I love how you turned the top into an ironing surface too.
those are lovely...I would love one...they go great with my decor of blue and green...thanks for the lovely giveaway
oh and I love the new shelf/ironing board combo...that is great...I hate dragging out the ironing board!
I think the bleeding was truly worth it!
Gorgeous chair cover as well.love all the bright bold colors!!
I'd love a cover, and I love the ironing surface idea - so clever! Thanks!
I'd love a cover! Hope your fingers heal up quickly. :)
Would love a cover. Am always dusting my machine. They look a little tedious to make.
So cute! Thanks for the chance to win one!
I would love to have one of your sewing machine covers. I love the colors! Evin5 at aol dot com
8...82...seems you could have made quite a few more if you wanted!
I have been meaning to make a cover for the last year at least & it just never seems to get done.
Yours are pretty :)
I hope this is my lucky day....I would love a machine cover. The colors are great! Thanks for the opportunity.
I really should make a sewing machine cover... LOVE the ironing space - very inspiring!
I hope this is my lucky day. I would love to have one of your sewing machine covers. I love those fabrics!
I would love one! Been on my list to make for over a year. Yours are beautiful! Thanks, courtlyons(at)yahoo.com
Love your generosity!! Looks like you are settling in well in Chicago!
now see, there are more than 80 of us :-)
I'd love to have it too, thanks for the opportunity
OMG!!!! I would love one of your covers. I too believe in covering my maching when not in use. I've been too busy to make one so I use the plastic cover (aka bag) that came with the machine. It does the trick but it's a plastic bag.
Glad to hear you have extras!!!
Dianne
love the sewing machine covers! your space looks so bright and cheerful!
Kris
Oh, those sewing machine covers are so cute! I would love one. Please add me to your drawing.
Good job muscling those shelves to work for you and your space. Too bad about the various cuts throughout your household and person! Those covers are great, and I hope I'm lucky today!
Love the ironing space on top of the shelf - great idea!
Hiya Jacquie! I was just commenting the other day about how I really need a machine cover -- this must be fate!! Crossing my fingers that I win a TPS original ... : D
I love your inspiration to redo a shelf unit into an ironing board. It's a "little claustrophobic" in my studio, too. (Don't we ALL have that problem?lol)
I'd love to win one of your machine covers, but it looks like I'll have to really cross my fingers, as there are many more than eight who'd love to own one!
Happy Week!
Donna
I would LOVE a sewing machine cover! My sewing room does double duty as the guest room so a cover would be super for when company comes! (Make them think my sewing room is always neat and organized!)
Lovely! I'm tossing my name into the hat too! thank!
I could really, really use a machine cover...my poor machine does get so dusty. Poor naked sewing machine.
I would love a sewing machine cover. I keep putting off making one for my machine. thanks for the chance of winning one!
You are so clever- your new sewing space is looking spectacular. I'm impressed. I'd love to win one of the covers too...but I more just came by to say Wow!
LMAO at your story! That type of stuff happens to me all the time. A simple little fix or project becomes much much more!
Talk about making lemonade!! Your studio looks gorgeous, and I love all your new touches. (Sorry about the fingers though, sheesh!) I have just the friend who would love one of those funky sewing machine covers!
One of those things I keep meaning to make and never get around to... would love a cover!
I would love one of the covers. I don't have one for my machine and it's always dusty. I must do better about protecting it!
I love your new fabric shelf/ironing station! So cute! I made a machine cover with Shea's pattern but I never put it on my machine. Its draped over the back of my sewing chair much like your fancy new cover :) I suppose that will come back and bite me in the ass eventually when I have to get my machine serviced for dust/fuzz overload...
I would love a cover for my sewing machine. Making one has been on my list for a long time.
Everything is super cute! I just cleaned up my sewing room, but my machine sure could use a cover! ;)
MMmm I'd love a cover! Thank You for the offering! Hope you are ok.
I would love one of your extra covers! Your new ironing board looks very nice too. You've inspired me to look at improving my space. Thanks!
I too would love a cover for my sewing machine. I love the idea of covers for chairs. I will be adding that one to my list for sure!
So sorry about the sliced fingertips! Ouch!
But the little ironing station is very cute as is the chair cover, so maybe it was almost worth it!
I've been meaning to make a cover for my machine for a while--even bought a pattern and it's around here, somewhere....
But I'd love to win one of yours!
Thanks for the giveaway!
sorry to hear about your fingertips ~ ouch ~ but your end result is wonderful. Love the chair cover and the use of the shelving. I also have a very small space to sew in and every corner is taken up with something or other.
Wow. Are you kidding? IF there are more than 8? Ha ....I'd pretty much bet we'll all one in on this one.
Soooo yep, I'd love one. I HATE using that hard plastic cover on my machine because when I am using my machine then I have to work around that big plastic thing sitting in my way. Something like this and to have it look so awesome would be great.
Looks like there's more than 8! :) I would be tickled to get one of your beautiful sewing machine covers. Thanks for the opportunity, Jacquie!
cute sewing machine covers. I can't get over the fact that you had to make 8 of them for the show! Crazy but great job and I know one of those would love to live in my house.
I would love one. I've been meaning to make one, but something always comes up!
I'd love one as I don't have a cover for my machine, and it's a Bernina so it should fit just fine.
I would love, love love one of the covers you made, the colours are fantastic and it would protect my sewing machine!!!! I hope I win!
Ouch! I hope your fingers heal quickly! Great ironing surface though. I've got a couple of those shelves, and I just might have to give that a try!
Love the sewing machine covers, and would have no problem putting one to use if I was so lucky.
I keep thinking I will make a cover for my machine instead of the piece of fabric I throw over it but it never seems to happen. I would love one of your covers, Jacquie. The stuff you make is so fun.
If there are more than 8 of us? Ha! My chances are slim, but I would love to win one of your beautiful covers.
Thanks!
Yes please!!!
I would love a cover! My poor Janome only has her boring white vinyl cover. So sad!
I love your new sewing room and the deco you added to your chair. My Bernina needs a cover so I would love to win one.
I love what you did with that shelf, glad you didn't do too much damage to yourself! I would love a machine cover, my Bernina usually sits uncovered and yours are really cute. Thanks for the chance to win.
Would love to win one of the machine covers. I'm not very good about keeping mine protected, so one of your beautiful covers would do the trick. Love how your chair looks. Thinking maybe my chair needs a face lift too.
I'd love one of your covers! Hope your fingers are healing.
I love your covers- so cute! I've been meaning to make one for my machine but haven't gotten around to it yet. Thanks for sharing!
I'd love a cover--I just throw a piece of cloth over mine, but sprucing up would be nice.
I love all the fresh, new colors in your room. I really need to update my stash. I'd love to be one of the 8 drawn to get a cover for my machine!
Oooo! My sewing machine would think she was on What Not Wear if she won one of those fun covers... from frumpy white plastic case that does nothing for her figure to bright colorful and stylish. Stacy and Clinton would approve!
You amaze me, what ever you need done you just do it. I would love a sewing machine cover.
Oh, such a wonderful cover would be perfect for my sewing machine... I keep my fingers crossed. Apropos fingers yours shall heal very quickly!
Want, Want, Want! I've been procrastinating on making one for years, and my Bernina is in for its annual service. Would love to have cozy cover for it when it comes home!
What a wonderful Idea, I could really use a cover..as my sewing room is a sewing cave in a dusty garage area.. haha. Thanks for sharing and I will look for a pattern in case I don't win!
Thanks for the chance to win! Love your "new" look. Love your creativity!
I would love a sewing machine cover! Thanks for the opportunity.
Love the covers!
I always plan on making covers for my machines, but never get around to it. So, yes, I would love to receive one of your covers. Thanks
They look great! Why not publish a downloadable pattern for this?
Oh, I hope your fingers are healing up. My husband and I sliced ours multiple times out in the garden this summer with super sharp scissors. =/ On the bright side, your remodeled shelf is AWESOME! So is your chair cover!
I do love your machine covers. If I don't win one, I'll have to make one! I usually throw my pressing cloth over my machine. Not very fancy =)
I've been telling myself I need to find a patter for a cover for my machine but just haven't ever gotten around to it. Would love to win one of yours!
Oh cute, cute! I now that I have made my list of things to make for Xmas - there is no doubt that my machine won't be receiving a new cover. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks so much for the giveaway.
sherry
Would LOVE to win one of these! Have been thinking I need to make one for the past two years and still not done :)
Love your blog.
Of COURSE there are more than 8 of us who want some of your handiwork! This would be great! I don't put the heavy plastic cover back on my 1630 between uses.
Otherwise, yes, please point us towards a pattern/ tutorial?
Thanks!
Beautiful sewing machine cover! Pick-me, please!!
i would love to have a cover for my machine. Thank you!!!
So cute. Way prettier than the plastic thing my machine came with.
a sewing machine cover would be awesome! i never cover my machine but i know i should!
Such pretty covers - of course I would love to cover my sewing machine with one! Sorry to hear about your cut finger mishap - hope it heals quickly.
Would love a cool cover like this one! Thanks!
Patrick
I just swept the ceiling of the basement crafty corner, which meant all sorts of crap rained down.... so, yeah, I really need a quick cover for the machine! Cool! Now I'm thinking I need a Halloween one, and a turkey one, and a Christmas one, and a valentine one, and.......
I LOVE your chair cover!! You are absolutely brilliant with that and your converted ironing surface!
Ooh, my Bernina would love one of those covers. I also love your chair cover, what great thinking to use it to cover the scratch! Thanks for the chance :).
I love your chair cover! My machine has been begging for a cover, and it's not on my to-do list anytime soon, so I'd love to win one of these! Hooray for TV!
Those are beautiful! I have been meaning to make one for myself for forever but I have never gotten around to it. I'm sure I could never make anything as beautiful as yours!
Super cute. I could use one of these!
Love those! I keep meaning to make a cover for my machine but haven't done it yet. Maybe someday, though winning a cover would be much more fun :) Thanks!
Or how about picking the last 8 requests?!
I'd love to have one of those lovely covers with two sewing kids moved back in along with their (uncovered) machines.
Backup option is another project!
great coverups!
Love your little ironing board, such a great idea! Hope your fingers heal soon and I'd love to welcome one of the covers to the UK!
Have two machines and only one cover. I'd love to win one :)
So pretty! Would love to cover my machine with one!
I would LOVE one...thanks for the chance!
This is one of those things I keep meaning to do but never do. Hopefully, I'll win and you can help a girl out. Thank you for the chance!
I'd love to win one of the covers ... my poor machine has the icky cover that came with it ... all white and uninspiring. Imagine what I could sew if I had inspiration!
Wow. I would love a sewing machine cover. Thanks for the chance to win!
I love your machine cover(s).
Thanks for sharing with us.
and the colors areperfect for my sewing room!
Oh, the colors would go beautifully in my sewing room. Love your new shelf/ironing board cover.
Good luck everyone!
Those are so cute. I love the idea to make chair covers. My cat has scratched one of my sewing chairs and this may be a great way to rectify that. Thank you for the nice giveaway. i would love to get one!
Are you kidding! I absolutely want one! Thank you TV! :)
I would love to have a sewing machine cover esp in your fabric print which I do not have in my stash.I so enjoy following your blog. love your stylr.

Thank you for your generosity.

I would love a cover (hanging head in shame for not already having one).
would love one! just what i need..
Great chair cover idea. Bravo for using your small space in a different way. I do so hate my ironing board set up all the time. Every time I plane a project my DH runs to hide all the power tools so I can relate to your poor fingers. I would love one of your machine covers, thanks for the chance.
a cover for my machine is one of the things I have on my "to do" list! Thanks for the glimpse into how a sewing show is put together.
I would love to win one! I have been talking about making once since I bought my machine, but there are so many projects on my list!!! Such a nice thing to give away!
I am so bad at remembering to cover my machine! One of your covers might help :)
Sorry about the finger slicing, but the shorter shelf with ironing space is a great idea!
Ouch that must of hurt. We sometimes do silly things trying to improve things. Glad they are healing.
I would love one especially because you made it and I sure could use it. I have a terrible red thing that came with machine and I keep promising that I will make one but never do.
I would love to win a sewing machine cover. Love the chair cover too. I should do that to boring black chair!
So sorry about your fingers. Your cover up projects look great! I really want to do something simular to what you did for an ironing surface.
I am terrible about using my cover, but I know I'd use one of those pretty ones!
Oh my, I really, really need a cover for my machine and I would be blessed to have one made by you. Thank you for sharing.
THis is certainly perfect timing! I just acquired a brand new sewing machine at the International Quilt Festival and it would be a shame for it to be sitting out collecting dust when I am not using it. I would love one of these cute cover ups!!
Yes, as a matter if fact, I _do_ need a cover for my machine - it sits in my office in my quilt shop and is probably full of cotton lint 'cause we tear our fabrics. :) Shoemaker's children, you know.
:) Linda
I would love to win a sewing machine cover to keep my sewing machine warm when I put it to bed on a cold canadian winter night! Love your placemats in the current issue of 'stitch'!
Hmm, looks like more than 8 are interested! I love these covers! What a sweet gift for whoever wins:). And the chair covers are fantastic! Necessity is the mother of invention, I say!
Sorry to hear about the accident - glad you are healing. Would love a cover.
In case you want to have a movable cutting board, consider getting a metal kitchen cart - it's agreat height, has space underneath for scrap baskets and it is so easy to walk around to do the cutting. and you don't have to attack it!
liz
The covers are lovely.I've procrastinated for 6 years and still use the torn plastic cover my machine came with. A new one made by you would be really special. Hope your fingers heal quickly.
Lovely fabric choice for the covers.
The covers are so pretty...I would love one rather than the old hand towel that I currently use.
i would love to have one. thanks.
ivyworis@yahoo.com
Your covered sewing chair is so cute! Who would have thought a flying rail could be a good thing?! I'm guessing one of your cute sewing machine covers would fit a Bernina 830 (No, sadly not the new model.), so I'd love a chance to win one. Thanks very much!
I just love what you did with that shelf! (Not your poor fingers). I do need a sewing machine cover as I haven't made one - aren't we silly! If I don't win, I will definitely make one!
I would love to win one of these and they are even in a great colorway for my craft room :).
I think you underestimated the desire for one of your "step outs". I'm commentor #200!!!! Thanks for the chance. BTW, from your post title, I thought maybe you had gone to Hawaii!!!
that metal cart is INSANE. if it was for sale, i would buy it!! love love love!
Lol... more than 8. I'd love one as it would finally give me the excuse to start covering up my machine when not in use...
