Crosscut and More

As some of you know I was out in Colorado a few weeks ago filming my Craftsy class, Improvisational Piecing - Modern Design. I had so much fun with my team, my producer, Kate, camera guy and future quilter Marshall and my switcher, Ivana.  Great people make for a great experience even though I had to be in front of a camera.

In the class I'll focus on teaching three techniques from the book with new adaptations and twists and of course new quilt designs, five of them. I'll keep you posted on the status of the class and the release date.

The one advantage of doing work in front of a camera is having loads of step-outs to work with when you get home.  This is the Crosscut quilt from the class.  I love that this quilt looks complex, but is so easy to piece.  I also love how the negative space flows in and out of the blocks.
I found a new quilting pattern to use on this quilt and I've fallen head over heals for it.
It's like the serpentine stitch that I use a lot, but instead of being rounded it's pointy and forms these cool diamonds.  I think you'll be seeing it a bunch from me.
Having extra blocks means I had time to experiment a bit.  I made a few blocks into half square triangles and you know with hst's the possibilities are endless...diamonds, pinwheels, zig zags, chevrons, etc.  I love the simple diamond, but it's amazing what a 6" shift will do.  It creates this "sliding triangle block" on the left which I think is kinda cool.  When you turn it vertically it creates a almost rectangular pinwheel.  I think I'll quilt these up to keep as class samples.  They're almost large enough to make into quilts, but I'm out of all of these fabrics.
I also made a larger version of the Crosscut quilt.  The quilt for the class is a bit small for me.  It's great for a sample, but I wanted a larger version that I could snuggle under.  This one is perfect.  I've added it to my stack of quilt tops to quilt.
I've got step outs from the other four quilts too....lots more possibilities and quilts that need to be made.  If only there were more hours in the day, more days in the week, more weeks in the year...

Oh, I love the "sliding triangle block"! And I am absolutely into that zickzack quilting, too!
And here is an hour of my time as a present- do something nice with it!

Love your Crosscut quilt!! I think the zigzag quilting adds absolutely to the feeling of the space flowing in and out of the blocks.

All of these samples are fabulous! I am so enthused by your use of purple!! If you ever need me to bind quilts for you just send them over. Have fun!

Ooooh, love the original quilt, and I love the other ideas you've got from the leftover pieces! I totally love this color palette, too, Jacquie! I usually shy away from using purple, but you're making me want to bust into my purple stash right now!

I'm loving this and am so excited to read that you are doing a Craftsy class. I can hardly wait to see it. And if you figure it out, I could use a few more of those hours, days, weeks, etc. myself. :D

Kate, Marshall, and Ivana were the best team!
Oh, the step-outs... Mine are sitting in the corner of my studio, looking for love.
Great quilt!

That stitching is so "fab"!!!! Thanks for the close ups. Adds enough texture it can almost stand on its own on a whole cloth! When I first saw some of the more "modern" piecings/quilts, I didn't DISlike them but was hesitant. NOW......well, let's just say, I look at them totally different and see application to the more "traditional" patterns to add 'spark' and freshness!! Awesome!!! Great post!! Hugs, Doreen

Stunning quilt, as always. Can't wait for the next book. But can I just say, I absolutely loved your Quiltcon talk and cried with you all the way, it was so real. It also made me think I really would love it if you adopt me. Oh how I would love to be part of your family. I would be such a good daughter. I can cook, am actually known for my 'experimental cooking' among my friends. I could keep the sewing room tidy and organise your fabrics, am really good at that. Think about it. :)

I made the mistake of checking TGP very early this morning on my iPhone. Still in bed. I was so inspired I couldn't go back to sleep. Lay there thinking how I can attempt this technique with what I have today. I need to finish what I'm working on :( So excited! (Nadine, you're so funny!)

The fabric combination is stunning! Is that Essex flax linen in the background? I can hardly wait for your class! And I have the same request as Nadine. Although I'm definitely not known for my cooking...so that might be a deal breaker.
