From An Overflowing Scrap Box...

It all started with some overflowing scrap boxes. I had to do something to get it under control, so I started cutting 2 x 4 inch rectangles. Before I knew it I had all of these. I also had this white on white print that I was going to use in another project, but it drove me nuts so I threw it in the scrap box too. (it was so hard to tell which was the right side). After some mindless cutting and chain sewing this is what I came up with, my version of a coin quilt (crib sized) and a doll quilt to boot. These are some of my very favorite fabrics from the scrap box; flea market fancy, amy butler, urban chicks swell, farmer's market along with a few others.
A couple more additions to the "need to be quilted" list. That's one LONG list!

I finished Ashley's spiderweb blocks for the Block Party quilting bee. She sent a gorgeous piece of linen and a bunch of beautiful fabric strips. The block is really easy and I actually had a good paper piecing experience. This is going to be one stunning quilt. I made a couple for myself too....I think I'll keep making them every once and awhile until I have a quilt.
Lastly, these are my maverick star blocks that are on their way to Tia for the Bushfire Quilt Project (see my last post for details). Thanks to everyone who headed over and offered to help! Another super simple block to make. Can't believe I haven't made these before. Victoria has made a great tutorial on making maverick starts in case you need a little help. Wish I had seen it earlier!
Project Improv update coming soon. I have a bunch of envelopes to open.

Love your scrap box quilts! Those spiderwebs are impressive looking too! Haven't gotten to paper piecing - but seeing them cropping up has my rethinking it :)

Love your wonky squares!

When you sew the sashing on those coin quilts, do you measure first or sew and cut?

I just did one and it ended up wavy and I'm not sure why...

I love how the coin quilts turned out; they are amazing. I am hoping to make one someday in the future.

amy,
i measure the sashing.....i've found that it keeps it from getting wavy.

Jacquie, you are truly an amazing inspirational quilt. I love the stars.

Lily Boot said...

well the chinese coins are just lovely - so crisp and pretty - but the spider block is truly gorgeous! I've always wanted to try one of those - and the linen sets it off so well, and then the stars for the bushfire victims. That's so amazing that people from so far away are reaching out to help. Everyday there are more sad, sad stories, and also ones of amazing bravery and endurance. Today, the firefighters are battling a huge blaze that is threatening the town of Healesville on the north east edge of Melbourne - fingers crossed that the winds stay favourable and oh if only we could tip Australia up a bit at the north, so that all our water here in Queensland (64% of the state is flooded) could wash on down to those that so need it.

Jacqui,

I just read your interview on Simply Robin's blog; I really enjoyed it. Please pass along my compliments to Robin as well (can't comment on it without a google ID). It has been so interesting watching your quilting progress and I love your enthusiasm and that way you've grabbed onto this hobby with both hands. Maybe you could do a post on your comment on "an artist has ideas and a point of view"--I would love to understand that more. What I particularly loved was finding out your reasons behind Project Improv and the fact it really got driven by your teacherly side :). Both my parents were teachers, my mother retired after being principal for many years and I just have to giggle because I definitely remember that my mother's instinct to teach permeated all aspects of her life. Anyway, hats off to you. BTW, love this post's blocks!

I love the coin quilt, how is it possible that your quilt scraps all match? Mine are completely different colors and I have a hard time thinking they would look good side by side on the same blanket!
