It's a Layout

I think this is it! Many thanks to Michaela for the structure and to Terri of Purple and Paisley who said the word diagonal in her comment, and all the other suggestions and advice. I think it was genius to double up the redwork which gives it more presence in the quilt. Many of you wanted to get rid of the red fabric...i just couldn't. One of the inspirations for this quilt is my great grandmother's turkey red tablecloth that has special memories for my mom and that I use now. That red fabric reminds us of that tablecloth. I still have to figure out borders, binding and the back, but it is well on its way. I have half of the fans hand sewn. I need to finish those and all the quarter circles and then this can become a top.

I like how it has a bit of a contemporary feel by using the fans in a non-traditional way. I love how the little red 4 patches frame the red work along with the inner "circle" of fans. I think it's a bit me, a bit my mom and it's an original. That's what I wanted.

Thanks to all of you who came by for Sew Mama Sew's Giveaway Day. These are the little fabric bundles that I'm giving away too. I'm still decorating. After checking the comments (and that took a LONG time!), there are some folks that are in the ballpark, but remember I'm giving away the quilt and 6 fabric bundles so 7 people can guess the correct number. We shall see how many trees are up by the deadline. So if you haven't made a guess, you might want to.

My mom's Bernina has come to visit. I'm off to quilt! Yippee!!! Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Beautiful Quilt. Not that you asked but I think the outer border should be the red. It would tie it all together nicely.

Fantastic! I didn't comment earlier on your redwork quilt, because the layout had me stumped too. But I love how you played around with the blocks and came up with something totally original and, I agree, it's part all three of you. A special keepsake, indeed.

Fantastic layout!! I love it without the big red pieces. What a difference a few days make.

An original, that is great. I love the layout and it is light and airy with enough red to make it sing. Great job.

it looks perfect, better than perfect actually!

Those fabric bundles look gorgeous, but no-one's near the right number? Just choose 8 trees, like my guess - PLEEEEEASE!!!!!

Now, thta layout, I LOVE! And, since you are still decorating, I'm certain I grossly under-estimated, and I'd like to submit a new guess of 37. Is that doable? ;->

Man, I knew I should have guessed higher! Ok this is absolutely beautiful! I love this layout - it looks amazing!

Well done. It looks great! I would never have come up with that myself. I guess that's what makes it unique.

Love it! Amazing how the fans and the diagonal lead your eye to the redwork instead of detracting from it...

Looks great Jacquie! My eye keeps moving - which is just the plan - right!? Have fun quilting :)

Jacquie, thanks for your comment to my blog as always :)
I always love red and I like your new quilt...fabulous. I wonder when will I "reach" the creativity like yours in making pattern...have a wonderful time with your mom.

Here's a border suggestion, regardless the fabric you choose, I'd suggest adding additional diagional blocks to complete the "big square". I'm not usually a symmetrical person like that, but my eye's keep trying to find the missing box corners...lol

The layout is wonderful....I would have never thought of it, but you did a great job!

Have fun completing your inter-generational masterpiece!

Jacquie,
how great to get to see it all together.
I love how you altered the fans. Like you said, it is so origanal, unique. It definately gave it more of a contemporary/ vintage feel.
Say hi to your mom! She did an amazing job too!
I would maybe do a thin inner border in darker red and outside border lighter.
Just a thought....

Tine said...

Amazing! I love this layout! It really draws attention to the redwork, without taking away from the other blocks in the quilt. It really evens out all the blocks, and makes it a gorgeous quilttop!!
Make the postcards....you'll need to keep a little of this one close :)

I totally agree that you've done a great job with this layout. It's so exciting when it all comes together, and to think you shared it with us. Thanks!
Merry Christmas!

I not only want to hear how many trees in your house... but I'm anxious to see pictures of them all!

Love your quilt... crazy about redwork. Your design is great!!

Did you see your little houses on my bedroom wall? I love that little hanging! I'm thinking of having it mounted and framed... our walls are too pale.

I'm so pleased the quilt ended up being just what you wanted. It looks great -- fun, interesting, unusual.

This is just so pretty. I have a very old set of redwork state flowers that I just didn't know what to do with. This might be just perfect to use some of them this way.

I just love the tulip block and I think I have one of those. I'm really enjoying your blog.

I like this lay-out very much and you are right to keep the red in. Without it, it would have become too bland.

YES! That is the perfect lay-out. Very becoming to all the elements.

Have fun quilting. Sometime you'll have to mention what kind of Bernina it is. I love mine too, even though it's missing the easy button to do such wonderful things as you produce on your mom's!
